POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Edition Holiday Box Review

I managed to wait until Christmas to open my POPSUGAR Must Have Winter Special Edition Holiday Box, and I’m so glad I did! It was an awesome present for myself, and all the items were a total surprise because no spoilers were released. This box was $100, just like all the other seasonal special edition boxes. I think they put one out for each season: Spring box in March, Summer box in June, Fall box in September, and Winter box in December. POPSUGAR also did a special collaboration with Neiman Marcus this year that came out in November, so it’s possible that there will be more special boxes in 2014!

I really love how all the Special Edition boxes come in these great sturdy boxes that can be reused. The heavy box also makes the entire experience feel so luxurious.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewPOPSUGAR does a great job of wrapping the items individually so it feels like a present. It was so much fun to open on Christmas!

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box Review

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewFatty Sundays Peppermint Crunch Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels | $6.95
So tasty! Anything that’s chocolate plus peppermint is a hit with me, so this was perfect. These pretzels were the only food item in the box, which is totally fine with me.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewGraphic Image 2014 Notebook Planner in Silver | $70.00
Wow, this is an amazing quality planner! Even though I have all my meetings and deadlines on my phone, I also like to keep a physical agenda. This notebook is so luxurious and I never would have purchased it for myself, so I was excited to get it in my box and look forward to using it in the upcoming year!

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewLunares Cheese Paddle with Knife in Poppy | $69.00
Such a great hostess or housewarming gift idea! The quality seems solid and it’s very attractive to have around the kitchen. Definitely a piece I would want to bring out the next time we are entertaining! However, since we so rarely serve cheese in this household, I may end up gifting it to someone who will appreciate it more and get more use out of the set. A minor note: even though the color is called poppy, the paddle is more of a deep red.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewWinks by Georgie ‘La Cherie’ No. 1 False Lash Compact | $28.00
Definitely the nicest set of false eyelashes I’ve ever owned! I’m so grateful that I got the first version (I think versions 2 and 3 were also sent out in these boxes) since they are the most subtle and least intimidating to wear. As a false lash newbie, these seem like a good place to start! I can’t wait to try them out and I love that this compact makes them easy to travel with.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewErickson Beamon Rocks Blondie Stone Bracelet | $98.00(?)
This bracelet might be a POPSUGAR exclusive, since I can’t find it anywhere! I know Erickson Beamon products can be quite pricey, and his bracelets with a similar clasp style are going for around $98, so I thought it was a fair assessment. When I first saw in the spoilers that there was a chunky bracelet, I wasn’t very excited. But now that I have it in person, I couldn’t be happier! This might actually be my favorite piece from the whole box.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box Review

A closer shot! I’m usually not a fan of statement jewelry and prefer all my bracelets small and minimal, but I actually love this piece. I think it’s so perfect for holiday parties and it would be great with a simple dress.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewThe hinged clasp makes this bracelet fit me surprisingly well. I usually have trouble with bracelets being too big but this one is perfect! I’m so ready to wear it for New Year’s!

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewTokyomilk by Margot Elena Body Souffle in No. 18 Chance | $40.00
Before I even got to the product, I was already so blown away with the packaging! This box is so heavy and well constructed, it definitely feels like a luxury item. The top twists off to reveal the body souffle, which smells great! I already love all Tokyomilk products (I highly recommend their hand creams!), so I know this body lotion is going to be wonderful. So glad I get to try it out, since I’m usually pretty reluctant to spend $40 on body lotion.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewCuyana Alpaca Infinity Scarf in Cream | $65.00
My favorite item is either this scarf or the bracelet. It’s just so soft; I love infinity scarves and I love anything alpaca! The color is really great because it’s so versatile, and it looks like other variations in the box were black and tan. The only downside is that this scarf can’t be washed (the tag says ‘dry clean only’), and since it’s a cream color I worry that I will get it dirty very quickly. I think I’ll try hand washing it and hope for the best!

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewAnother great thing about this scarf was that it came in its own box that is perfect for gifting. I kept the scarf for myself, but I was still impressed by how easy it would have been to give as a gift.

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box Review

POPSUGAR Must Have Winter 2013 Special Limited Edition Box ReviewThis holiday box has a value of $376.95, and I’m so impressed! Each item felt luxurious yet practical, and I think they made some great choices for the holiday theme. I know I will definitely be getting more Special Edition boxes in the future! On the other hand, since I got both the regular December box and this one, I think the regular monthly one was a little lackluster (see my December box review here). I think their monthly boxes suffer a little bit when they have multiple boxes to curate, and I know they had three for this month! But I’m very excited for a new year with POPSUGAR, and I’m hopeful that 2014 will bring even better boxes 🙂

For anyone interested in the monthly subscription, (I can’t recommend it enough! I already have a 1 year plan!) POPSUGAR Must Have is $39.99/month, and you can use the code REFER5 to get $5 off your first box!

My Cotton Bunny December 2013 Review

I was a little curious about all the tampon/pad subscriptions out there, so I finally subscribed to one: My Cotton Bunny. I didn’t pick them for any specific reason, and I’m definitely going to be trying some other ones before I choose a favorite. Anyways, My Cotton Bunny is a subscription service for “that time of the month”; they send you the tampons or pads of your choice as well as chocolates and a special gift. It’s actually quite convenient since it saves me the trouble of running to the store to get necessities, but more importantly for me it gives me a little something to look forward to during that dreaded week. Plus, chocolate is always a win, regardless of what week it is! My Cotton Bunny is $16.00/month.

I won’t go into detail about my tampon/pad preferences (TMI, much?) but they carry all the big brands: Kotex, Tampax, Playtex, Always, and O.B. They also ship all their products in the manufacturer’s original packaging (as opposed to single pads and tampons like some other subscription companies) so that’s extra peace of mind. Unfortunately, that means you can only select one product for each shipment.

Onto the review! I’ll just be reviewing the extra items and not the actual tampons for obvious reasons…

My Cotton Bunny Subscription December ReviewI love the box and the packaging! It’s super adorable and definitely something that I would look forward to receiving each month.

My Cotton Bunny Subscription December ReviewI like that they have a theme for each box. December’s was “Winter Night” and included tech gloves (love!) and tasty treats.

My Cotton Bunny Subscription December ReviewMarlo’s Bakeshop Midnight Marlo Cookie | $2.00
So good!! It’s softer than traditional biscotti and tastes like a very dense brownie with espresso. I can definitely see this becoming my new favorite guilty pleasure! And since Marlo’s Bakeshop is based in the Bay Area where I grew up, I also love that they use local ingredients.

Taza Chocolate Almond Crunch Mini Bar | $2.25
I really love Taza Chocolate and I’ve gotten their minibars from other subscription boxes before too. The quality is really great and most of their products (including this one) are certified organic.

Touchscreen Friendly Gloves | $5.00(?)
These gloves weren’t branded and didn’t come with any kind of label, so I’m guessing on the value. The touchscreen fingertips work very well, and I was able to send a series of text messages without problems. The pattern is also really cute!

My Cotton Bunny Subscription December ReviewOverall I was pretty impressed with this box. I think getting a shipment each month with chocolate and other goodies will definitely cheer me up! My only complaint is that you can’t mix different products. I know LeParcel lets you create a custom box with any combination of tampons/pads/panty liners, and you can mix different brands too. I will be trying a few different tampon subscriptions before I settle on one, but My Cotton Bunny has left a great first impression with me! I also think the price is very fair: for $16.00 I feel like I definitely got my money’s worth.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 Review

I’m slowly working my way through the pile of boxes that has accumulated in front of my door while I was away. Up for review today is my POPSUGAR Must Have December box! I already knew what to expect since I was reading spoilers while on my trip (don’t judge me, airports are boring!), but it was still very exciting to open the box and experience the items in person.

POPSUGAR Must Have is a subscription service that sends a variety of items for women that are curated by the POPSUGAR editors. Items typically include food, beauty, home, among other miscellaneous things. Each month is $39.99/month, and you can use the code REFER5 to get $5 off your first box!

Check out last month’s review here.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewFirst look!

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewGhirardelli Squares Holiday Assortment | $6.00
Ghirardelli Squares Milk & Caramel | $4.25
I didn’t think I would be excited about Ghirardelli chocolates, but I actually really love the holiday assortment. The pumpkin spice caramels are dangerously good! Of course, I would value these bags at more like $3.00, since they are very easy to find on sale in lots of stores.

CC Made Caramel Corn in Classic Caramel | $4.00
These were pretty good and it’s definitely great for the holidays, which is fun! As others have pointed out, the spelling error on the packaging (spelled artisanal as “artisinal”) does bother me more than it really should…but hey the popcorn is tasty and that’s the most important!

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewMIXT Studio Wrapping Paper | $9.00
While I do love wrapping paper and this is a useful product for me, I’m not sure it was the wisest choice for PS to include it. Many people bought these boxes as gifts for Christmas (POPSUGAR even recommended it!), and it’s going to be really pointless to receive a gift that includes wrapping paper. Not to mention that the paper quality is not good and rips easily. I certainly wouldn’t be paying $9.00 for it even though the designs are very cute.

Govino Go Anywhere Flutes | $12.95
Another miss for me. I think PS intended for this to be used to throw a holiday party? With plastic champagne flutes nothing gets broken…but then who is actually throwing a party with only 3 guests? And I don’t think I will be reusing these plastic cups so the price point is very high for what I consider to be one-time use disposable cups.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewModelCo Fibre LashXTend Mascara | $19.95
My favorite item in the box! I haven’t tried a fiber mascara yet and I’m super excited to play around with it. I get a lot of ModelCo products from various boxes and they always seem like a solid brand with good quality cosmetics.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewNCLA Designer Nail Wraps | $16.00
I haven’t tried nail wraps in forever, so this will be a fun experiment. I like that the wraps are both seasonal and versatile. I think the polka dot ones are really cute and could be worn outside of the holiday season very easily. I’m picturing a cute summer mani with a fun sundress.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewLulu Frost for POPSUGAR Bracelet | $110.00
And last but certainly not least, this bracelet! I’m pretty torn about it, since it’s the big ticket item but I don’t like it as much as I want to. The bracelet is too big for me and is chunkier than I thought it would be. I think the charm itself is really cute and I love how sparkly it is, though I’m unsure if it warrants the $110 price tag.

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewA closer shot of the piece:

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 ReviewThis kind of bothered me: the back of the charm has this tag engraved into it. In my opinion, it feels kind of cheap and is frustrating because the charm flips around a lot when it is worn as a bracelet and then I feel like a walking advertisement for POPSUGAR. I saw some other ladies were painting over the back with a sparkly nail polish, and I like that idea a lot. I think I might do it! I also saw lots of people reusing the charm as a pendant for a necklace, and I love the results. I’ve already started hunting for a delicate silver chain!

POPSUGAR Must Have December 2013 Review

So in total this box has a value of $182.15, which makes it one of the highest value boxes from POPSUGAR that I’ve seen a while. And yet, so many people are dissatisfied with this month! I think the curation feels a bit scattered and some of the pieces didn’t feel special or relevant. A December box should definitely feel more luxurious! I think I’m starting to notice a trend that whenever the Limited Edition box is also going out, the box for that month with the regular subscription suffers a little bit. I remember the Fall Limited Edition box made shipping for the regular box very delayed. Anyways, I’m hoping that January will be awesome and make up for this lackluster shipment.

Julep Maven January 2014 Boudoir Collection cuticle pusherAhhh I love all the colors!! I’m so excited to get the entire collection and I really can’t wait to try all the different finishes. I am probably most excited to try Abigail, since it just looks like the prettiest pink ever. How about you? Is anyone else this excited about January’s colors? I’m even impressed with the beauty products. I’m so glad to see nail related items instead of the usual makeup. I am definitely very interested in trying the Vanish Cuticle Softener.

For anyone interested in signing up for Julep Maven (I highly recommend it!) you can use code FREEBOX to get your first month free. You won’t be able to get these amazing January pastels for your first box, but it’s a great way to figure out if you like the formula and you can get the February collection if you like it. Julep also makes it really easy to skip a month, and they have solid customer service!

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 Review

It has been a week since my last post, but I’m officially back from my business trip! And of course, I had a pile of boxes waiting for me as soon as I got back. The biggest surprise for me was my Elizabeth and Clarke box, since I ordered it way back in September and had completely forgotten about it.

Elizabeth and Clarke is a clothing subscription service that ships out once every season; they specialize in neutral colored tops, which I absolutely love (I’m all about neutrals!). Each season you can preview the collection and select which items you want. All their styles are designed in house and produced exclusively for them, so you won’t find any of their pieces anywhere else! The quality is super amazing for the price that you pay ($30 for one shirt, $50 for two shirts, and $60 for three shirts) and I think they are coming out with an option to re-order shirts from previous collections soon.

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 Review

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 ReviewI like that they send a postcard with all the items in the collection on it. It will be really helpful for reordering in the future! Also, something that I think is really awesome: all the shirts are named after inspirational women named “Elizabeth”.

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 ReviewThe Davis: I really love this peplum top! It’s hard to show the quality of clothing in a photograph, but this material (Ponte de Roma knit) is very thick and structured but also has a bit of stretch for a very flattering fit. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too big for me. I bought this in size 2 after consulting the size chart (I usually wear a size 4 in JCrew clothes), and it’s still a bit large! For anyone interested in trying Elizabeth and Clarke, I would definitely recommend sizing down.

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 ReviewThe Barrett: This is actually from their Fall 2013 collection that I missed out on. I emailed customer service and they were very helpful and let me substitute it as a piece in my winter box! So for anyone interested in older collections, it’s worth it to email or call to ask if there is any availability. I’m also just really impressed with the responsiveness of their CS team!

Again, with this shirt I loved the fit and the material but this shirt was very large. Even for a slightly oversized fit, I needed to exchange it for a smaller size.

Elizabeth and Clarke Winter 2013 ReviewOverall, this was a great introduction to Elizabeth and Clarke. This was my first shipment from them, and I now know to size down for most shirts. I’m hopeful that my future purchases will fit perfectly on the first try! Luckily they offer free exchanges and returns! Each shirt was $25, and I think they are worth way more than that. The quality is so impressive and the styles are flattering. Not to mention their customer service is wonderful. Right now you can order from their Spring collection, which as 3 new styles and 2 “favorites”. I’m thinking I’ll try The Hutton and The Arden for my next shipment. How about you?
