I had a little throwback Thursday moment this morning when I saw a familiar box peeking out at my from my mailbox. My Birchbox!!
Birchbox was the first subscription box I ever signed up for. I joined in early 2011 and quit in 2013, mostly because I was completely overwhelmed with samples. For the record, I don’t recommend being simultaneously signed up for 5 beauty boxes unless you are some kind of superwoman. I was signed up for Birchbox, Ipsy, Glossybox, Julep, and Sample Society all at the same time, and I was drowning in makeup. I spent a few months being very poor while I hoarded all my samples, unwilling to give up any of my subs. I finally ended up cutting Sample Society, then Birchbox, and finally Ipsy. It wasn’t until I found an amazing deal on Gilt City last week for a whole year of Birchbox for only $74.25 that I resubscribed.
Birchbox will always have a special place in my heart as “the original”. I think what really sets them apart is their amazing point system. For every sample you receive in your box, you can fill out a review to get 10 points (equivalent to $1) to spend in the Birchbox shop. And since every box has at least 5 samples, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get $5 worth of credit each month if you fill out all your reviews. For a box that only costs $10/month, getting $5 credit each month is an incredible deal. I think the codes WOMENSHEALTH100 and BBJETBLUE still work: you can use either one to get $10 credit in the Birchbox store with any new subscription.
I actually wasn’t expecting a July box since I signed up so late in the month, but I’m glad to receive it. Such a cute box!
July’s box was done in partnership with Women’s Health magazine. I love how often Birchbox does collaborations. For August they created a box option with The Everygirl that sold out pretty quickly.
Number 4 Super Comb Prep and Protect | $4.85
With the beach season in full swing, I can always use more leave-in conditioner. I love that it also adds UV protection for hair. Too bad the smell is stronger than I would like, and it’s sort of a musky/woodsy sort of fragrance which isn’t my favorite.
Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream | $0.92
For anyone who likes the Harvey Prince Hello perfume, this is a must have! It’s super saturated with the fragrance and it really lasts all day. I put it on this morning and it’s still going strong at 4PM, and will probably last into the night. The cream is moisturizing but nothing special, it’s really all about the perfume!
Cynthia Rowley Beauty Liner | $12.03
I got the Silver color, and totally love it! This is a Birchbox exclusive product, so I might get another fun color with my points. Maybe sky blue? I haven’t been able to test the full lasting power yet, but I put a little bit on this morning around 10AM and it hasn’t smudged, despite the Houston humidity. Hopefully it will stay put after work!
SmartyPants Gummy Vitamins for Adults | $0.33
I’ve gotten these from PijonBox before in the past, and I’m not a big fan. I also dislike that they cut down on their sample size. You’re supposed to eat 6 of these vitamins every day, but this sample only contains two. They used to have samples that included 6 vitamins so you could at least get a full day’s worth. But I just think eating 6 every day is totally excessive. We currently use the Gummy Chews from Costco, and you only need to eat two a day. It also gets pretty expensive if you eat 6 a day, since a full bottle would only last you a month.
Supergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream | $2.05
I got the Light to Medium shade, so it’s good to see that Birchbox is diligent about following beauty profiles. One of my biggest pet peeves is getting a great product that I can’t use because the shade is wrong. I really like this CC cream; the self-adjusting formula actually works! I got a very seamless color match and it has decent coverage. Loving the SPF 35 aspect as well.
This box also came with a card for a free year of Women’s Health magazine, valued at $9.99. I hope it will give me inspiration to stay on my fitness routine! I’ve been slacking a bit this month. For those who don’t want to magazine, you can also redeem a $9.99 refund, which is I think is very generous.
There was also a cute little booklet with 12 challenges. My personal favorite is “Sit Smarter” with tips on how to have better posture when you’re sitting. Since I spend most of my day in front of a computer pushing pixels around, this couldn’t be more relevant.
Overall, my box value was $30.17 including the magazine redemption. Not too shabby since my monthly box cost is only $6.18. Not to mention I got another $5 credit for the Birchbox store since I did all my reviews! This is reminding me of why I adore Birchbox so much and why I was subscribed for a full two years! So excited for my August box. I love how they are letting customers choose a sample now. I picked Stainiac from TheBalm, and can’t wait to get my hands on it. What sample did you choose?
