Birchbox August 2014 Review

I totally forgot I re-subscribed to Birchbox last month, so I wasn’t expecting this box at all! Makeup in my mailbox is always a good way to start the day, so it made my Saturday pretty fabulous.

Birchbox is only $10/month (even less if you prepay), and they have this amazing point system that really makes them the best beauty subscription in terms of value. For every sample you receive in your box, you can fill out a review to get 10 points (equivalent to $1) to spend in the Birchbox shop. And since every box has at least 5 samples, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get $5 worth of credit each month if you fill out all your reviews.

Super cute information card!

Birchbox August 2014 Review

theBalm Stainiac | $2.27
This month Birchbox let members pick a sample for their August box from a list of options, and this is the one I went with. I was curious about this stain because it looks so similar to Benetint, and I absolutely love Benetint. As it turns out, this gives a much more sheer color than Benetint does, and only lasts a few hours. What I do like about this product is the gel formula, compared to the liquid formula of Benefit’s stains. The gel is easier to work with, but overall the results weren’t as nice.

Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator | $5.66
I like this exfoliating cleanser because it’s gentle enough to use multiple times a week. My favorite product for exfoliating is Kate Somerville’s ExfoliKate, but that one is pretty harsh and strong. This one had barely any scent and was easy on the skin. It’s also affordable, since the full size is huge (4.23 oz) and only $34.00.

Whish Shave Cream in Acai Grapefruit | $2.94
This isn’t my first time getting a Whish Shave Cream from Birchbox, so I knew what to expect. Each time I get one of these samples I enjoy it but not enough to warrant a purchase of the full size. It leaves my skin soft and smells good, but not any more than regular drugstore stuff. I also feel like I have to use quite a bit to get a good shave, so the full sized one wouldn’t last me very long.

ModelCo Bronzer | $7.60
I’m on the lookout for a new bronzer, so this was my favorite sample from the box. I wish I had gotten the Matte instead of the Shimmer, since my only complaint is that there is a bit too much gold glitter. But otherwise I like the powder a lot. It’s easy to use because of the sheer buildable coverage and versatile enough to double as a very light contour.

Catherine Malandrino Style de Paris | $6.47
I really wanted to like this perfume based on the description of “lush orange blossom, sweet jasmine, and fresh gardenia”. Three things I totally love! But unfortunately for me I think the musk overshadows the citrus and floral notes. I do give this perfume props for how strong it is! I used one spritz and it stayed on all day. In fact, it was still so strong by the end of the night that all my friends at dinner noticed I was wearing a new perfume.

And as a random sidenote, I totally thought it was a chocolate bar when I first opened my box. Doesn’t this look like some sort of chocolate packaging??

Birchbox August 2014 Review

I got about $24.94 worth of products, but it wasn’t the best Birchbox for me. I didn’t really love any of the samples, but I will at least use most of them. And I am happy that I got to pick one of my own samples for this month. Here’s hoping they continue doing that in the future!

  1. Extremely disappointed as well and I didn’t get an option for a sample this month, oh well. May just cancel at this point
