Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample Options

The first Birchbox of the year! I knew what I was getting for January because I chose a guest curated box, but it’s still exciting to actually have the box in hand. I chose the “Relax and Recharge” box option and I’m pleased with my choice.

Birchbox is only $10/month (even less if you prepay), and they have this fabulous point system that makes every month a total steal. For every sample you receive in your box, you can fill out a review to get 10 points (equivalent to $1) to spend in the Birchbox shop. And since every box has at least 5 samples, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get $5 worth of credit each month if you fill out all your reviews. It’s really satisfying when you want to treat yourself to something and remember that you have $50 worth of credit sitting around in the Birchbox shop! It was a lifesaver for Christmas shopping, that’s for sure. Did you know that Birchbox has a ton of cool home goods and food items in their shop too? I got my boss a kickass set of Jonathan Adler coasters with my points 🙂

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsPerlier Intensive Nurturing Body Balm | $4.25
Body balm in the Winter is always a good thing. The lavender scent is pretty strong, so I’m glad I actually really really like the scent of lavender. I imagine it could be overwhelming for someone who doesn’t love it as much. It’s a pretty thick cream/balm and doesn’t absorb quite as quickly as I would like, but definitely packs a ton of moisture. It did wonders for my dry elbows and knees!

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsBalance Me Wonder Eye Cream | $17.76
I’ve gotten this eye cream before and really enjoyed it, so I’m happy to get another one. This tube is a very generous size and lasts me a long time. The eye cream is awesome for sensitive skin and it doesn’t have any heavy perfumes that irritate the eyes. I use it at night and have pretty good results the next morning (no puffiness!). Wish they made a day version with SPF.

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsBriogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask | $4.95
I chose this box mostly for this hair mask, since my hair is really damaged and sad right now. The sample size is pretty decent, I was able to get 2.5 complete masks out of it. I don’t think it’s as moisturizing as I would like, which is disappointing. The instructions say 5-20 minutes and I left mine in for about 30, and it felt kind of like regular conditioner. After I air dried it felt a little tiny bit softer and smoother than before, but not enough to warrant the extra 30 minutes of time! I guess my hunt for the perfect hair mask continues.

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsManna Kadar Lip Locked Gloss Stain in All of Me | $0.20
I’m completely obsessed with lip stains so I’m always happy to try a new one. The color was a little too pink for me, but otherwise I thought the formula was good. The lasting power is decent and the gloss isn’t sticky. I’m surprised by how many uses I got out of this tiny tube.

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsWhen Travelmate Sheet Mask | $7.00
I’m still saving this mask for a DIY spa day, so I can’t attest to the results yet. But I gotta say: I love it when I get sheet masks in my boxes! Ever since I roomed with my Korean friend (who has ridiculously flawless skin) and she introduced me to the world of Korean skincare, I’ve been completely hooked on masks.

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample OptionsTeapigs Tea Bags (2) | $1.33
Usually I get excited for tea in my subscription boxes, but these two flavors are a big miss for me. The liquorice and peppermint flavor is very sweet and strange, and the chamomile is very boring. I would love to try some other flavors by Teapigs, since their teabags are really cute and pretty with quality whole tea leaves.

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample Options

And I can’t believe we’re already thinking about February! The sample choices are out!

Birchbox January 2015 Review plus February 2015 Sample Options

(Please note: the images I used are full sized items. The sample choices will most likely be smaller and in different packaging.)

I’m so curious about the mystery sea salt spray! Apparently it’s a brand new product just being released and sampled exclusively through Birchbox. They won’t even reveal the name of the brand or line! All we know is that it’s a celebrity hair stylist and the sea salt spray will actually moisturize hair. Sounds intriguing! Their guest editor box for February is Rent the Runway, and we’re all going to receive some sort of offer for their website. I’ve been wanting to try Rent the Runway for a while now so I’m thrilled!

Guest Box (Rent the Runway):

  • Fekkai Dry Shampoo Not Soap
  • Radio Body Wash in The Stuff That Cupid Dips His Arrows In
  • Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner in Assorted Colors
  • theBalm Read My Lips Lip Gloss in Bam
  • Derma e Anti Wrinkle Exfoliating Cleanser

I really want to get the Fekkai dry shampoo and the exfoliating cleanser, so I might go with the guest box. (Added bonus for the guest box: it also comes in a really cute special Birchbox.) But on the other hand, I really don’t need another body wash, eyeliner, or lip gloss. I can’t decide! I’d love to hear what y’all are going to choose!

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 Review

EDIT 1/15/2015: New promo code out for today and tomorrow only! Get 50% off with promo code SAVE50. Brings your January box price down to only $19.95! Use it while you can, it might expire if they hit a certain number. I totally caved and got a second box *hangs head in shame*

I can’t believe we are already halfway through January. Doesn’t it feel like Christmas was just last week? I didn’t realize how quickly time was traveling until I found my pink POPSUGAR Must Have box in the mail and I was like umm…what month is this for? And once I realized I got all sad about how quickly January is flying by. I need a pause button, stat.

I received my box in a very timely fashion and got my tracking email ahead of time, so I think POPSUGAR is starting to recover from the disastrous website makeover. A few select people still had issues with shipping/tracking this month, but it’s overall a huge improvement compared to October/November.

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 ReviewFirst Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream | $30.00
I so desperately needed this! The Winter weather has taken a serious toll on my skin and I have to moisturize fanatically just to keep up. I love that this is fragrance-free and is designed for both face and body. Anything that makes my beauty routine faster is a win in my book. This cream absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel sticky or greasy; I highly recommend it! I’ve tried First Aid Beauty products before and they have always been fantastic for sensitive skin.

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 ReviewNature Valley Protein Peanut Butter ‘N Dark Chocolate Granola | $3.68
I wish the flavor didn’t have peanut butter! I love Nature Valley granola and I love the dark chocolate flavor, but I really dislike the taste of peanut butter. I’m definitely in the minority here so I can’t fault POPSUGAR in any way (it’s also listed as an extra). Good thing my boyfriend is happy to take this bag off my hands. I think he sees the POPSUGAR box as his monthly snack fix.

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 ReviewManduka eQua Hand Towel | $16.00
Love this! It feels so high quality and luxurious and will be a great addition to my gym bag. I’m one of those sweaty people at the gym (sorry, TMI?) so I always always always need to bring a good absorbent towel and this totally fits the bill. I used it as a hand towel earlier today and it was just perfect. It’s also going to be perfect for barre classes to prevent my feet from sliding during certain exercises.

Jack + Lucy Pom Pom Knit Hat | $32.00
We received Jack + Lucy touchscreen gloves in a previous POPSUGAR box and I really liked them, so I was happy to see another item from the brand. This hat is surprisingly soft and warm (I know it doesn’t look that soft in the picture, but trust me it’s soft) and looks cute as a slouchy beanie. For those who don’t like the pom pom at the top, it’s very easy to remove without damaging the hat itself.

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 ReviewToGoSpa Eyes Gel Pads | $12.50
These sound really interesting and the girls over at MakeUpTalk who have tried it seem to like it a lot, so I can’t wait to give it a go. I’m a little hesitant to use it now since the instructions recommend chilling the pads in the fridge beforehand…but it’s so cold! Who wants to put ice cold gel masks under their eyes right now? I’ll hold onto this for when it gets warm again. Don’t judge.

KeepCup Brew 12 Ounce Travel Cup | $26.00
I’ve been wanting a cute glass coffee cup for a while now and this fits the bill perfectly. It’s short enough to fit right under our Keurig for super easy coffee on the go. I like it so much I might get a second one in a less girly color for my boyfriend. I love how customizable you can get on their website! You can pick the lid color, plug color, and band color and do fun mix-and-match color schemes.

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 ReviewSkin Jewel Tattoos | $18.00
This felt a little random to me since I associate tattoo accessories to be more a Summer thing. It reminds me of music festivals and beaches and warm weather. Is that just me? It feels kind of strange in a January box, but that’s just my opinion. Like who would even see these on me if I wore them now? I’ve been wearing long sleeved sweaters almost every day! I am excited to try them once it warms up enough for dresses and shorts again! Sidenote: these tattoos are sponsored by Empire (the TV show).

POPSUGAR Must Have January 2015 Review

When I first saw the spoilers for this box I wasn’t all that impressed, but once I had it in person I really liked it. There are a lot of practical items that I am already getting lots of use out of and most of it felt very appropriate for January. The total value for the box comes out to $138.18 which is great! I pretty much never worry about value when it comes to POPSUGAR Must Have since it’s always over $100. I can’t wait for my February box, even though I still can’t accept how fast time is moving. Hoping for something cute and Valentine’s Day themed!
