The first Birchbox of the year! I knew what I was getting for January because I chose a guest curated box, but it’s still exciting to actually have the box in hand. I chose the “Relax and Recharge” box option and I’m pleased with my choice.
Birchbox is only $10/month (even less if you prepay), and they have this fabulous point system that makes every month a total steal. For every sample you receive in your box, you can fill out a review to get 10 points (equivalent to $1) to spend in the Birchbox shop. And since every box has at least 5 samples, you’re pretty much guaranteed to get $5 worth of credit each month if you fill out all your reviews. It’s really satisfying when you want to treat yourself to something and remember that you have $50 worth of credit sitting around in the Birchbox shop! It was a lifesaver for Christmas shopping, that’s for sure. Did you know that Birchbox has a ton of cool home goods and food items in their shop too? I got my boss a kickass set of Jonathan Adler coasters with my points 🙂
Perlier Intensive Nurturing Body Balm | $4.25
Body balm in the Winter is always a good thing. The lavender scent is pretty strong, so I’m glad I actually really really like the scent of lavender. I imagine it could be overwhelming for someone who doesn’t love it as much. It’s a pretty thick cream/balm and doesn’t absorb quite as quickly as I would like, but definitely packs a ton of moisture. It did wonders for my dry elbows and knees!
Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream | $17.76
I’ve gotten this eye cream before and really enjoyed it, so I’m happy to get another one. This tube is a very generous size and lasts me a long time. The eye cream is awesome for sensitive skin and it doesn’t have any heavy perfumes that irritate the eyes. I use it at night and have pretty good results the next morning (no puffiness!). Wish they made a day version with SPF.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask | $4.95
I chose this box mostly for this hair mask, since my hair is really damaged and sad right now. The sample size is pretty decent, I was able to get 2.5 complete masks out of it. I don’t think it’s as moisturizing as I would like, which is disappointing. The instructions say 5-20 minutes and I left mine in for about 30, and it felt kind of like regular conditioner. After I air dried it felt a little tiny bit softer and smoother than before, but not enough to warrant the extra 30 minutes of time! I guess my hunt for the perfect hair mask continues.
Manna Kadar Lip Locked Gloss Stain in All of Me | $0.20
I’m completely obsessed with lip stains so I’m always happy to try a new one. The color was a little too pink for me, but otherwise I thought the formula was good. The lasting power is decent and the gloss isn’t sticky. I’m surprised by how many uses I got out of this tiny tube.
When Travelmate Sheet Mask | $7.00
I’m still saving this mask for a DIY spa day, so I can’t attest to the results yet. But I gotta say: I love it when I get sheet masks in my boxes! Ever since I roomed with my Korean friend (who has ridiculously flawless skin) and she introduced me to the world of Korean skincare, I’ve been completely hooked on masks.
Teapigs Tea Bags (2) | $1.33
Usually I get excited for tea in my subscription boxes, but these two flavors are a big miss for me. The liquorice and peppermint flavor is very sweet and strange, and the chamomile is very boring. I would love to try some other flavors by Teapigs, since their teabags are really cute and pretty with quality whole tea leaves.
And I can’t believe we’re already thinking about February! The sample choices are out!
(Please note: the images I used are full sized items. The sample choices will most likely be smaller and in different packaging.)
- Marcelle Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes
- Laura Geller Beauty GlamLash Dramatic Volumizing Mascara
- Mystery Sea Salt Spray
I’m so curious about the mystery sea salt spray! Apparently it’s a brand new product just being released and sampled exclusively through Birchbox. They won’t even reveal the name of the brand or line! All we know is that it’s a celebrity hair stylist and the sea salt spray will actually moisturize hair. Sounds intriguing! Their guest editor box for February is Rent the Runway, and we’re all going to receive some sort of offer for their website. I’ve been wanting to try Rent the Runway for a while now so I’m thrilled!
Guest Box (Rent the Runway):
- Fekkai Dry Shampoo Not Soap
- Radio Body Wash in The Stuff That Cupid Dips His Arrows In
- Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner in Assorted Colors
- theBalm Read My Lips Lip Gloss in Bam
- Derma e Anti Wrinkle Exfoliating Cleanser
I really want to get the Fekkai dry shampoo and the exfoliating cleanser, so I might go with the guest box. (Added bonus for the guest box: it also comes in a really cute special Birchbox.) But on the other hand, I really don’t need another body wash, eyeliner, or lip gloss. I can’t decide! I’d love to hear what y’all are going to choose!
