Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off Code

Pooch Party Packs is a new subscription box for dogs that sends 4 or 5 treats, toys, and/or grooming supplies every month. Their unique angle is that each month they include a toy or treat from a small pet business in the US, which I really love. I’m a big fan of supporting small businesses and enjoy buying handmade and/or products, so the idea of doing the same for my dog is very appealing. Sidenote: wouldn’t an Etsy-type dog subscription service be amazing?!

Pooch Party Packs offers three different size options for your dog: small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). Maddie is around 46ish pounds but we always size up for her, so we received the box for large dogs.

Pooch Party Packs costs $34.99/month (+$4.99 shipping), $31.99/month with a 3-month subscription, or $29.99/month with a 6-month subscription. If you’re interested, you can get 10% off your first box with FIRSTPACK!

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off CodeSuperior Farms Venison Nik Knacks | $3.99
Always glad to receive any sort of chew in a pet subscription box. Maddie goes through them quickly and I love having extras on hand. Venison ear is a better alternative for rawhide, which can cause digestion problems in dogs with sensitive stomachs or allergies. Even though Maddie doesn’t have any problems with rawhide, I’m always on the lookout for better options. I’m happy to report that this is 100% venison (no additives!) and it’s quite substantial. I’ve seen some deer ear treats that are small and flimsy, but this is about 8 inches long and pretty thick. Even for an aggressive chewer, this ear lasted a good amount of time.

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off CodeDoghouse Biscuits Little Bitty Cheese Bones | $7.00
These biscuits are Pooch Party Pack’s “small business item” for April, and they’re made by a little husband and wife company in Missoula, Montana. I love that they use local ingredients and test all the products on their own dog! All handmade in Montana with no refined sweeteners, chemically produced food colorings, or preservatives. I also really appreciate that on the back of the bag the packaging date was clearly marked (April 10th) so I know that these are fresh and I can guesstimate how quickly I should feed them to Maddie.

Ingredients for the Little Bitty Cheese Bones: whole wheat flour, cheddar cheese, vegetable oil, parsley flakes, garlic powder. Any time an ingredients list is that short and simple, I’m completely on board. They looks and smell great! Almost like Cheez-Its, but for dogs.

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off CodeMaddie was a big fan of these biscuits! I tried to take some pictures of her eating it, but she gobbled them up way too quickly. I swear, she could probably win some type of speed-eating competition for dogs.

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off CodeKong Aqua Knots | $14.99
I’m a huge fan of KONG toys since they’re always well constructed and hold up well, so I was happy to see one of their products in this box. The design of this toy is pretty smart: the interior has a knotted rope for structure, which means it uses less stuffing (yay for less clean up!) and also adds durability. For Maddie, the added bonus is that when she’s done ripping up the fuzzy plush part, she’ll still have a knotted rope to play with.

JW Pet Darwin the Frog | $7.79
Yay, a rubber chew toy! I would love to see more of these types of toys included in pet boxes! I tend to see more stuffed animals and other plush toys, but they just don’t cut it for a destroyer like Maddie. This frog had pretty high promises, and it’s meant to be “thrown, chewed, carried, and squeaked as much as any dog can”.

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off Code

She was pretty excited about how loud the squeaks were.

Pooch Party Packs April 2015 Box Review and 10% Off Code

Unfortunately after a bit of play, the feet on the frog sort of started to fall apart and crumble. I was worried that Maddie would choke on the parts so I had to take the toy away. She was pretty bummed about it, and I was feeling really let down by such a promising toy. I contacted Pooch Party Packs about the defective product and received a reply in literally 5 minutes. Literally. Talk about a new record! The customer service rep was so sweet and helpful and was more than happy to send me a new toy.

Overall, I’m thoroughly impressed with the level of customer service I received. I think that’s the beauty of small businesses! You can get really fast personal responses and you can tell that the people behind the scenes are passionate about what they do.

The overall value for this box comes out to $33.77, which is just a hair lower than the cost of the box itself. And I do think there’s a bit of extra value in discovering new small businesses that you otherwise would not have access to. I also think it gets to be a pretty good deal if you commit to a longer subscription since the price per box goes down ($5 savings on each box in this case). But in general I would really love to see just a bit of increase in what you receive in the box as well. Just one more small item would be perfect!

Given that this is Pooch Party Packs’ first box and they’re a brand new company, I’m really pleased with the results. Maddie loved all the items in her box, and I am very happy with the curation. Can’t wait to see what wonderful boxes they’ll roll out in the future!

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

April’s BarkBox landed on my doorstep a few days ago loaded up with goodies, and thank goodness it arrived just in time. With all the rain Houston has been getting lately, Maddie has been indoors all the time and has gone through almost all her toys and chews.

BarkBox is $29/month if you do the month-to-month plan, but it goes down to only $18/month if you sign up for the whole year! We sprung for the whole year since it was such a great deal. Before getting BarkBox we were probably dropping between $30 to $50 a month at pet stores, and now one box usually lasts us through the month. You can use my link for 10% off any subscription. And if you use my link, they’ll donate a free box to the Bark-N-Rest Retirement Center! It’s a great cause and I’m pleased that BarkBox gives back to the doggie community!

You can choose different sizes when you order, and we get the Large box (for dogs over 50 lbs). Even though Maddie is about 46 lbs, she has the energy and strength of a much larger dog so we always size up for toys. BarkBox always has a theme for each month, and April’s is Fitness.

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeHueter Toledo Gripper | $8.85
I was really thrilled to see this, since it was marked as a “heavy duty” toy “for tough play”. Maddie is really rough on all her toys, so I was excited about something that could potentially last for more than an hour.

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

She was really into the ball and it was the first toy she went for from the box, so I took that as a good sign.

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Unfortunately, she was able to rip this hole in the toy after just a few minutes. I emailed Barkbox about the issue and they got back to me within a day with a $15 credit to use in the BarkShop’s “Tried and True” collection. This was my first time utilizing their “Scout’s Honor” policy: “we guarantee that if your pup doesn’t ruv an item in their box, just give us a holler and we’ll send a replacement better suited for them, no fuss.” I’m happy to report that they truly do honor their guarantee, and they have really phenomenal customer service. I’m one happy subscriber here!

Kyjen Tuff Guys Mat | $10.00
I thought this was so funny, I couldn’t stop laughing when I pulled this out of the box. Perfect for the Fitness theme! I linked to the full sized version of the toy since I can’t seem to find the smaller size online. Perhaps it’s a BarkBox exclusive? Either way it has squeakers and crinkley plastic inside, so Maddie was a fan. She seems to really like the mat toys BarkBox sends.

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeSojo’s Simply Lamb | $6.53
These are the perfect treats; it’s 100% lamb. Like literally just freeze-dried lamb. How awesome is that? They’re also surprisingly affordable, considering it’s an all-meat treat. No preservatives, no artificial fillers, all made in the USA. No complaints from me!

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeYeti Corporation Large Yak Chew | $9.99
Definitely a unique item I would not have discovered myself. This is a chew made with yak and cow milk using a traditional recipe by the native people in the Himalayan region of Nepal. It’s sort of like a hardened cheese bar, and is very very resilient when it comes to chewing. Maddie has barely made a dent in it, and she’s an expert chewer! While it’s more pricey than your average chew, I think it’s worth the money since it lasts so long. When the chew gets to be a tiny piece, you can microwave it for 45-60 seconds and it will puff up and become crunchy. I’ll have to buy more of these things when this one runs out!

Barkbox April 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeThe value for this month is $35.38, which I’m satisfied with. I’m almost glad one of the toys had an issue because it allowed me to really test the BarkBox Scout’s Honor policy. I’m honestly very impressed with the service I received and the $15 credit that was offered to me. I ended up picking a durable chew toy for Maddie that came out to $12, and free shipping was added for the replacement. Such a great policy and it really takes all risk away from this subscription!

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample Options

Ever since it was announced that April’s Birchbox box design would be by Rifle Paper Co. I’ve been completely obsessed. Is it sad that I was way more excited about the actual box than the contents of it? I feel like I could have received an empty box and still been really happy. Don’t judge me!

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample OptionsBut seriously, how pretty is this?! Can Rifle Paper Co. please design for all boxes from now on? Or have their own subscription service?

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample OptionsFekkai Pre-Soleil Hair Mist | $6.80
I am so happy I received this in my box. I was just thinking to myself the other day about trying out some hair SPF options, and now I have one from Fekkai with great reviews to play with. I don’t think I’ve ever been disappointed with a Fekkai product yet, and this is no exception. The smell is delightful (citrus!), it controls my frizz, and keeps my scalp from getting burnt. I’m actually glad we got the travel sized bottle and not the full size, since this is much more convenient to toss in my purse. When I run out, I’ll be refilling this bottle from the full sized version! Love!!

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample OptionsObliphica Intensive Hair Serum | $8.63
Usually I would be a bit disappointed to get 2 hair products in the same box, but no complaints about this one. It’s got rave reviews and I’ve been wanting to try it for such a long time. Plus I don’t get to try very many hair serums from my subscription boxes so it’s refreshing to get one. I used it on damp hair before styling, and the results were great: less frizz, super soft texture, and lots of shine.

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample Options

Whish Shave Cream in Blueberry | $2.93
I feel like anyone who has subscribed to Birchbox for more than a few months has gotten a Whish Shave Cream at some point. I know I’ve gotten several in the past. At this point, it’s really not exciting to see yet another Whish Shave Cream, but on the other hand I find them really great for travel. I honestly don’t think it performs much better than other (less expensive) shaving creams that I’ve used, I just like that it’s in a convenient travel-friendly tube.

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample OptionsLAQA & Co. Sheer Lip Lube Pencil | $13.98
I feel like I’ve tried this product before, or at least something very similar from the same brand. I received the Honeypot color, which is a bubble gum pink. At first glance it seems very pink, but actually goes on very very sheer. It adds just a hint of color, and works well with my complexion. I would say it looks a lot like PosieTint from Benefit on me.

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample OptionsWEI Manuka Bee Venom Mask | $7.50
Such an interesting concept! I was intrigued as soon as I saw this. I’ve been completely obsessed with masks lately so anything new is always welcome. This has a warm tingling sensation that feels a little irritating at first but went away quickly. Afterwards my skin felt really smooth and soft and looked brighter. I wish I could try it again before committing to the 8-pack for $60! It’s not crazy expensive or anything, but for the same price point I already have a few masks that I swear by (looking at you, GlamGlow!).

Birchbox April 2015 Review plus May 2015 Sample Options

I had such an amazing March box I had no idea how April could top it. But April really blew me away! Not only was the box design completely adorable, the value was great and the curation was spot-on for me. My box had a value of $39.84 and the hair care items and the bee venom mask were right up my alley. So thrilled with Birchbox lately!!

I can only hope next month will keep this trend of great boxes going.

Or if you aren’t feeling any of those items, you can get the guest curated “Beauty Solutions” Box:

Personally I think I’ll go with the Real Chemistry Luminous 3 Minute Peel. It sounds promising and seems to have great reviews! How about you?

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review

Yippee, my April POPSUGAR Must Have box landed on my doorstep this morning full of Spring goodies! I already spoiled the contents for myself since I have no self control, so the only surprise was how much I loved each item in person!

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodePotting Shed Creations Garden-In-A-Bag (Basil) | $10.00
Really love getting an herb to plant in lieu of a snack this month. I think Basil was such a perfect choice! It’s versatile and incredibly easy to grow. I live in an apartment building with limited natural lighting (and have less than zero gardening talent) and even I’ve been able to successfully grow basil!

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeProduce Candles Rhubarb Spring Candle | $20.00
Oh my god this stuff smells amazing. I could smell it before I even opened the box, and just keeping it on my desk unlit is filling the room with the scent of sweet rhubarb. I’m definitely buying more of these right away! The jar is very generously sized and this will last quite a while, though I will probably be burning it all the time. Rhubarb is just too perfect for Spring!

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeOne Love Organics Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum | $39.00
We’ve never received a body serum before, so I’m excited to see that POPSUGAR is branching out! The packaging is beautiful and the scent is lovely. If you’re a fan of gardenias, this would be perfect for you! Bonus points for not being overwhelming at all. The serum absorbed quickly for me and I didn’t even need to use any moisturizer or lotion afterwards.

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeFlip & Tumble 24-7 Shopping Bag | $12.00
Always happy to get another reusable shopping bag, especially ones that fold up compactly. I love that this one doesn’t require folding, it’s more of just stuffing it into a ball shape again. Much faster and easier than my Baggu ones! (I don’t even try folding my Baggu bags to fit into the pouches anymore, they’re just in a loose pile in my car…)

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeI kind of like the single handle/strap design, and the quality feels good. I’m excited to rock this at the next farmer’s market!

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeDabney Lee Dottie Umbrella | $20.00
Yay finally we got an umbrella in a POPSUGAR box! It rains so often down here this is definitely going to come in handy. The umbrella feels very well made and the pattern is so cute and versatile. It has an auto open and close button which I really love and overall the umbrella is compact and lightweight.

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeMott 50 Gift Card | $25.00
I’m torn on whether or not this card counts toward the value of the box, since the website doesn’t actually carry any item under $25. And you can’t apply the “gift card” towards shipping costs…so I guess I don’t actually consider it to be a true gift card. The concept of Mott 50 is intriguing to me though: sun-protective clothing and accessories that are at least 50 UPF (ultraviolet protection factor).

POPSUGAR Must Have April 2015 Review Promo CodeOverall value for this box is really low for POPSUGAR Must Have standards: only $101 (not including the $25 gift card). However, despite the low retail value, this is a fantastic box for me. I truly love each item included and really appreciate some of the more interesting items like the body serum and herb-in-a-bag. It also definitely delivers on the theme of Spring and freshness!

Can’t wait to get the May box next month! It feels so far away. As always, you can use MUSTHAVE5 to get $5.00 off. Keeping my eyes peeled for better promo codes (but don’t count on it).
