Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box Review

Pooch Party Packs is a new subscription box for dogs that sends 4 or 5 treats, toys, and/or grooming supplies every month. Their unique angle is that each month they include a toy or treat from a small pet business in the US, which I really love. I’m a big fan of supporting small businesses and enjoy buying handmade and/or products, so the idea of doing the same for my dog is very appealing.

Pooch Party Packs offers three different size options for your dog: small (10-20 pounds), medium (20-50 pounds), and large (50+ pounds). Maddie is around 46ish pounds but we always size up for her, so we received the box for large dogs.

Pooch Party Packs costs $34.99/month, $31.99/month with a 3-month subscription, or $29.99/month with a 6-month subscription.

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box ReviewStarbarks Plush Toy by Haute Diggity Dog | $13.00
This is so adorable! I was reluctant to let Maddie play with it since it’s just so darling and I know she would shred it within minutes. But in the end I relented…

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box Review

And yep! It was completely obliterated almost instantly. I literally took this picture a minute after I gave her the toy.

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box ReviewOrganic Oscar’s Deodorizing Touch-Up Spray | $13.99
I never considered using a spray in between baths for Maddie, so this was an interesting product to try. I think Maddie’s coat is so short it just made her feel almost greasy, so we’ll probably have to pass this on to one of her doggie friends. I’m sure it is a good product for dogs with longer hair, it just didn’t work for us.

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box ReviewDoggone Stylish Reversible Bandana | $10.00
Digging the patriotic bandana print! It’s going to be perfect for Fourth of July weekend! The reverse side is a white background with stars. I like that this is designed to slip over the collar, and also that it’s handmade by a small business.

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box ReviewPawsitively Gourmet Cookies | $3.90 ($1.30 each)
Super cute and I like that they’re individually wrapped, but I do wish we had gotten more variety instead of 3 cookies from the same company. Maddie loves cookies and these were a hit with her. All of Pawsitively Gourmet cookies are hand decorated and manufactured in the USA with only USA grown ingredients.

Pooch Party Packs June 2015 Box ReviewOverall it was a mixed bag for us, mostly because the spray didn’t work out and that was a good chunk of the box value. The overall value came to $40.89, which is decent for a pet box. It just wasn’t a good fit for my dog since the spray is useless and the plush toy was very flimsy. I’m a bit disappointed since I received such a wonderful box in May and this one feels a bit thin like it’s missing an item or something. But I’m hopeful that when I try PPP again in the future it will be better. Like I mentioned in my previous review, I do think there’s a bit of extra value in discovering new small businesses that you otherwise would not have access to.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Last month Houston got hit by way too much rain and lots of places got flooded, so when Tropical Storm Bill was hovering around the coast everyone went nuts. Our local grocery store ran out of bottled water within 2 hours! We were all preparing for some pretty bad flooding and potential outages. Luckily nothing serious happened, but it’s a good thing we had our June BarkBox on hand since all the dog parks basically turned into huge muddy swamps. I think the parks were the only real casualty this time…

BarkBox is $29/month if you do the month-to-month plan, but it goes down to only $18/month if you sign up for the whole year! We sprung for the whole year since it was such a great deal. Before getting BarkBox we were probably dropping between $30 to $50 a month at pet stores, and now one box usually lasts us through the month. You can use my link for 10% off any subscription. And if you use my link, they’ll donate a free box to the Bark-N-Rest Retirement Center! It’s a great cause and I’m pleased that BarkBox gives back to the doggie community!

You can choose different sizes when you order, and we get the Large box (for dogs over 50 lbs). Even though Maddie is about 46 lbs, she has the energy and strength of a much larger dog so we always size up for toys. BarkBox always has a theme for each month, and June’s is “Space Camp”. As someone who lives 40 minutes from NASA, I thought it was the best theme thus far!

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeEtta Says Crunchy Duck and Sweet Potato Bar | $3.00
This brand has become a staple in our household, so we’re always happy to receive more from this company. It’s typical for BarkBox to send one chew each month, but this is the first month they’ve sent a chew bar like this. I do prefer the hardier chews since they last longer, but I also understand why they mix it up every now and then. As usual for Etta Says, great simple ingredients list: rawhide, duck, sweet potato, natural caramel color.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeBarkMade Flying Saucer | $9.00
I love the unique squeaker in this toy. It seems to be disc shaped across the bottom of the toy and it makes sound when you press anywhere on the saucer. It’s definitely sturdier than your typical bulb type squeaker. Maddie’s been happily tossing this thing around all day and making a big racket 🙂 I am a bit disappointed that I received the Medium 5″ size and not the Large 6.5″, but it’s not too huge of a size difference.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeHueter Toledo Airball | $11.82
We received a Hueter Toledo toy from BarkBox in the past that was horrible, and so ever since then I’ve been cautious about their products. As expected, this one had a hole in it after just 2 or 3 minutes of play. There’s something wrong with the rubber that they use. It’s really soft and easy to rip apart, and it splinters into small pieces that can easily be swallowed by your dog. I highly recommend exercising cautious with their toys!! I do find positive reviews for their products on Amazon, so maybe I’ve just had the misfortune to receive two defective products in a row? I don’t plan to test more of their toys though, since the risk of Maddie swallowing plastic parts is much too high and definitely not worth it.

The good news is that BarkBox customer service is amazing. I sent them an email voicing my concerns and they provided me with a voucher for a free toy from their Tried and True collection, and also promised to look into the issue with the materials. One of the many reasons that I love BarkBox is their Scout’s Honor policy: “Scout’s Honor is our guarantee that if your pup doesn’t ruv an item in their box, just give us a holler and we’ll send a replacement better suited for them. For real. No fee. No fuss. No disappointed pups”.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeGreen Bark Gummies Health and Vitality | $5.84
We’ve never tried this brand before, but it’s apparently quite popular. I’m seeing great reviews for a lot of their other stuff on Amazon! This is the newest addition to their line of products, and it’s a duck treat with chia for added omega-3 fatty acids. It’s grain free, corn free, soy free, made in the USA, and contains no artificial flavors or added sugars.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeBixbi Peanut Butter Pocket Trainers | $7.19
Generally Maddie is easy to please; she’ll eat anything and everything. Definitely not picky at all about her treats. But every once in a while she’ll discover something she LOVES, and I think these are it! She adores blueberries and these contain blueberries and cranberries, so that’s probably why. I like that they are ridged in the middle so you can break them in half for even smaller portions. Perfect for training! As usual for the treats that BarkBox sends out: made in the USA and no soy or corn or wheat.

Barkbox June 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeTotal value for June is $36.85, which I’m pleased with. I’m consistently impressed with the customer service I receive from BarkBox and this month is no exception. Even when I get a toy that doesn’t work out, I always know that I’ll be taken care of and Maddie won’t have to be disappointed, which is great peace of mind. Can’t wait to see what fun theme they’ll reveal for July!

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review, July 2015 Inspiration Sneak Peek, and $5 Off Coupon

The June POPSUGAR Must Have box came almost a week ago and I’ve been using the items, but was just so lazy about finishing my review. Lately it feels like I get nothing done and spend most of my time daydreaming about the beach and going on vacation…

POPSUGAR Must Have is $39.99/month and features a mix of lifestyle items, beauty products, accessories, and snacks. Generally there’s one food/snack item every month, 1 beauty item, and 1 lifestyle/home item. The rest seems to vary month to month. It’s hands down my favorite subscription and this is my 2nd year as a subscriber. I can’t recommend it enough! For those who are interested, use MUSTHAVE5 to get $5 off your first box.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponQuay Australia Mandate Sunglasses | $45.00
We were shown this item as a spoiler, but I love them so much more in person! The frame is a chic matte texture and the shape works well for my face. Usually sunglasses fall too low for me and don’t properly sit on the bridge of my nose, but this one is narrow enough for a good fit. I also like that the brand is very on-trend. So many celebrities have been sporting Quay this Summer!

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponSpongelle Boxed Flowers Fleur en Boite in Papaya Yuzu | $16.00
I could smell this as soon as I opened the POPSUGAR box, and it’s completely divine! I’m obsessed with the scent! This buffer sponge is a really cool idea: it’s infused with extracts that moisturize your skin as you buff and can be reused at least 14 times. Since it already comes with a hanging ribbon, I’ve just kept it on a hook in my bathroom and it’s serving as a nice little air freshener. I think this would be so ideal for travel since you can skip bringing body wash (one less liquid to worry about when it comes to TSA!).

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponPacifica Enlighten Eye-Brightening Shadow Palette | $14.00
Such beautiful packaging! I really don’t need more eyeshadow since I go through it pretty slowly, but I was looking forward to trying this one since it’s infused with coconut water. I’ve been obsessed lately with Josie Maran’s coconut water cosmetics, so it’s fun to get a more cost-effective option. I’m pleased with how creamy and easy to blend it is, and when I used a primer it lasted all day.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponPretty colors! The first two are perfect every day shades for me, and the gold and purple will be fun for more bold occasions. All the colors are shimmery, but I think in the Summer you can get away with that.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off Coupon

Yogitoes Peacock hBand | $4.00
I seem to be getting a ton of new headbands lately! Usually I prefer thinner styles, but I tried this one the other day during a workout session and I was very impressed by how well it held up. It stayed put without budging and kept sweat out of my eyes (sorry if that was kinda gross…) and dried really quickly. I can see why Yogitoes is such a beloved brand amongst yogis! This headband is also designed to be used as an eye mask during Savasana and can also double as a wristband to absorb sweat.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponSNAP Infusion Super Candy | $4.00
I’ve never said no to a gummy candy in my life, so these were gone almost instantly. I have no idea if it really boosted my energy or anything, but they were delicious. And when it comes to candy, that’s all I’m truly interested in 🙂

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponIn the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume | $16.77 (Amazon price)
I don’t know if I’m in the minority but I love getting books in my subscriptions. I love to read but seem to be really bad at actually buying books, so it’s nice to have one land on my doorstep. I used to enjoy Judy Blume’s books when I was younger so I think it’s great to receive her latest novel for adults. It seems like a good beachside read and the reviews have been mostly positive, so I’m looking forward to reading it. I do also love that it’s a sturdy hardcover instead of a paperback.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponSweet & Spark $30 Gift Card | $30.00
I don’t count the value of gift cards unless they can pay for something on the website in entirety, which this one can’t. There’s plenty of cute jewelry items on the Sweet & Spark website, but I think the cheapest piece I found was $48. Good thing this doesn’t count as a real item in the box, since it’s marked as a “Special Extra” on the card.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review plus $5 Off CouponOverall it was a good month for me. I think this box definitely screams “Summer” and I really like all the items that I got (excluding the gift card). The value is $99.77 if I use the Amazon book price, or $110.95 if I use the book’s retail price on the cover. As always, I’m pleased with the value even though it’s slightly lower than POPSUGAR standards.

And for those who are curious about next month, the July inspiration is out:

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Review, July 2015 Inspiration Sneak Peek, and $5 Off CouponI’m really interested to see what 4th of July will be about, since this box won’t get to us until the holiday is over. Maybe they mean something like BBQ sauce or something red, white, and blue? I’m also dying to know what the easy travel one might be. I’ve got serious wanderlust right now!

Interested in getting July? Use MUSTHAVE5 to get $5 off your first box. I’ll keep y’all posted if any better codes come out.

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample Options

Gosh I’m so behind on reviews this month. We’re halfway through June and I haven’t done a single one. I guess everything slows down in Summer, including my brain.

I can’t remember the last time we received a plain brown Birchbox instead of a special box design. No complaints here though, I love seeing the creativity and collecting these gorgeous boxes. June is no exception: I’m digging the color and message!

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsBeauty Protector Beauty Wash Body Cleanser | $2.00
I definitely hoard little bottles of body wash since they’re so perfect for travel, but I must admit I actually used this one right away. It smells sooo good! I really love all the hair products from this brand so I use it pretty often, and they always have a very distinctive smell. Well I guess I’m not the only one obsessed with it since they made a body wash with this exact scent!

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsReal Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel | $4.80
This was one of the sample choices for last month, and people have been giving it great reviews! It’s actually a really interesting product to use. You spread the gel on your face and massage in circles, and you start to feel these little balls forming under your fingertips. That’s your dead skin, which is pretty gross but completely fascinating. If you’ve ever put Elmer’s glue on your hands and rubbed it off (I was obsessed with doing this as a kid…) it kind of feels like that. I was impressed with how much dead skin came off despite this feeling gentle on my skin and will probably repurchase! Great find through BB 🙂

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsMarcelle Mini Waterproof Eyeliner in Mulberry | $4.00
We were all supposed to receive the new Eyeko eyeliner in the June box, but there was a holdup at customs and Birchbox was not able to get the Eyeko liners in time. As a substitution, each subscriber was sent a Marcelle liner for this month and they will ship the Eyeko one when it arrives. I definitely appreciate the honesty and the bonus product!

Anyway, now onto the actual product. I’m happy to receive the Mulberry color, since it’s a bold color that also happens to work with my skintone. It’s blendable and easy to apply. The only thing I don’t like is that it’s not really a waterproof liner. Once you’ve gotten used to MUFE Aqua Eyes I think you hold waterproof pencil liners to a new standard, and this one just doesn’t cut it.

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsTOCCA Eau de Parfum in Isabel | $2.00
Generally not a big fan of receiving little perfume vials, but whenever I discover a scent I really like it makes me think twice about these samples. I didn’t expect to love Isabel as much as I do, but it’s a fantastic find for me! It’s similar to Chloe (which I also am obsessed with), but it’s got a spiciness to it and is perfect for Summer. Not to mention the packaging and TOCCA’s branding is completely adorable. I do also appreciate getting eau de parfum samples versus eau de toilette ones.

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsDr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm SPF 25 | $4.00
With Summer in full swing I don’t think I can get enough SPF, and since I’m way too lazy to do a full face of foundation when I know it will just melt off, BB creams are perfect for me! It’s just enough coverage to mask a few imperfections, but it’s light enough to feel like I have no makeup on. This one felt great on and blended well with my skintone, so I’m a happy camper.

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsPura Vida Lace Headband | $2.25
Love this little lace headband! It’s so cute and dainty, yet practical. I also really lucked out with the color, one of my favorites. It’s a little on the smaller side but still fits me. I can feel that it’s a bit tighter than I’m used to though. It doesn’t bother me, but if you’re sensitive to that sort of thing you might not want to get this brand. In terms of cuteness though, this one takes the cake! Loving the tiny charm accent on the knot as well.

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample Options

Verdict on the June box: despite getting 6 items, the value for the overall box is one of the lowest I’ve received from Birchbox thus far, at $19.05. Nonetheless, it’s still a great deal for $10. AND I got 60 points for doing my reviews, which translates to $6.00 worth of store credit. I’m also really pleased with most of my samples and discovered some great new products that I’ll be buying in full size. Guess it just goes to show you that a high value isn’t everything. Sometimes my favorite boxes are the ones with low retail value.

Now onto Sample Choice!

For July, each subscriber will receive a Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick. You’ll get to choose one of three shades: Beso (a true red), Venezia (a bright coral red), or Bella (a bright pink).

Birchbox June 2015 Review plus July 2015 Sample OptionsOr, you can opt for Beachy and Bright Box:

  • Stay All Day® Liquid Lipstick in Bella (bright pink)
  • Juara Enzyme Radiance Scrub
  • theBalm® cosmetics Balm Desert® Bronzer/Blush
  • Oribe Après Beach Wave and Shine Spray
  • Supergoop! City Sunscreen Serum SPF 30

What do you think? I’m torn between Beso and Venezia, but probably leaning towards Beso since I’ve heard wonderful things about it being “the perfect universal red”.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Spoiler #2!

Spoiler number 2 is out for the POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 Box! I’m surprised they’re releasing a second spoiler, they must have ordered way too many boxes for this month. Usually they’re sold out well before this time.

The June inspiration board came out a while ago, and now we know two of the items for the inspiration words. Use MUSTHAVE5 to get $5.00 off your June POPSUGAR Must Have box.

POPSUGAR Must Have May 2015 Full Spoilers and June 2015 Sneak PeekEach June 2015 box will contain a Pacifica Enlighten Eye Brightening Shadow Palette, valued at $14.00. I don’t usually get too excited about more neutral eyeshadow, but I am eager to try this one since it’s infused with coconut water. I’ve been really loving the Josie Maran coconut water products, so I’m hopeful that this will be as effective and good for the skin.

POPSUGAR Must Have June 2015 SpoilerAnd in case you missed the earlier spoiler, each June box will also contain a Quay Australia Mandate Sunglasses (a $45.00 value).

POPSUGAR Must Have Gift With Purchase Coupon plus June 2015 Spoiler!
