Barkbox August 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Rounding up the end of the month is BarkBox, which ships a bit later on the calendar than a lot of other boxes. It’s always a pleasant surprise to see it on my doorstep, since my dog goes nuts when she sees it and “helps me” go through everything…by which I really mean attempt to grab the toys before I can take any photos. I’m pretty convinced she recognizes the Barkbox logo at this point.

BarkBox is $29/month if you do the month-to-month plan, but it goes down to only $18/month if you sign up for the whole year! We sprung for the whole year since it was such a great deal. Before getting BarkBox we were probably dropping between $30 to $50 a month at pet stores, and now one box usually lasts us through the month. You can use my link for 10% off any subscription. And if you use my link, they’ll donate a free box to the Bark-N-Rest Retirement Center! It’s a great cause and I’m pleased that BarkBox gives back to the doggie community!

You can choose different sizes when you order, and we get the Large box (for dogs over 50 lbs). Even though Maddie is about 46 lbs, she has the energy and strength of a much larger dog so we always size up for toys. BarkBox always has a theme for each month, and August’s is “BBQ Block Party”.

Delca Corporation Watermelon | $11.00
Cutest toy ever! How perfectly Summer is this? I’m really glad we got the larger version of this toy, and it’s the perfect size for Maddie. There’s a large disc squeaker inside that is more durable than the little bulb ones, and she completely adores running around with it in her mouth squeaking all over the place. I’m definitely buying another one when this one (inevitably) gets shredded by her!

Healthy Dogma Bacon Barkers | $8.00
We’ve received treats from Healthy Dogma in the past and Maddie has always loved them. As with most of the treats we get from Barkbox, these are made in USA (the only exception from Barkbox has been products from Canada, which I have no objection with), contain no corn, and are made with all natural high quality ingredients.

Ingredients list: Barley, Bacon, Oats, Peas, Tomato Pomace, Canola Oil, Cranberry, Carrot, Sweet Potato, Celery, Beets, Parsley, Lettuce, and Watercress. No preservatives, additives, or artificial fillers!

True Dogs LLC Coke Can | $11.00
I always get excited to see a rubber toy in the box, since Maddie is so destructive and really needs chew-friendly toys. This large size is perfect and the toy is definitely ideal for dogs who love to play rough. I also think this soda can toy is so great with the theme!

Barkbox August 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

There are openings on both ends to hold treats, which Maddie goes nuts for. She has learned to bring the toys over to me when she wants a refill; so smart and spoiled.

Throughly enjoying her newest addition to the toy collection.

Barkbox August 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Bocce’s Bakery Chicken Treats | $10.00
Bocce’s Bakery is a brand we’ve discovered through Barkbox, and probably one of my favorite finds. They always use locally sourced, all natural, high quality ingredients and are made in the USA. All of their treats are free of any artificial preservatives, and the ingredients list is so simple: oat flour, chicken, pumpkin, and rosemary. How beautiful is that? Also note the adorable heart shapes of the treats.

Barkbox August 2015 Review plus 10% Off CodeButcher’s Block Steer Stick | $2.00
Every box usually contains at least 1 chew, so we’ve learned to expect that. I usually save these for when I’m clipping Maddie’s nails or something else she hates, and they’re always a godsend. Butcher’s Block is the most common brand we get, and they only use USDA approved meat sourced from the USA.

Barkbox August 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

My box for this month comes to a total of $42.00, which I’m very satisfied with. We got a toy that will last for a long time (the soda can), and Maddie really enjoyed everything else as well. I don’t think I’ve ever had a month of Barkbox that I was dissatisfied with, since even when I’ve had an issue with a toy their customer service has been nothing short of amazing. Can’t wait to see what fun Fall themes they’ll have!

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 Review

Finally got around to photographing and reviewing my August POPSUGAR Must Have box, which got here about a week ago. It’s so hard to believe how quickly this month flew by! Please forgive my procrastination, things have just been so hectic lately.

POPSUGAR Must Have is a monthly lifestyle subscription box for women. Each month includes a variety of items, usually from categories like food, beauty, home, and fitness.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewRoyal Apothic Tea Balm Firming Eye Treatment $36.00
Love this eye cream! It’s a brand new product from Royal Apothic and is very moisturizing and absorbs quickly. It has no added fragrance, which for an eye cream is really important. I can’t tell you how many times a heavily perfumed eye cream has irritated my eyes. The packaging is also lovely, which is to be expected from Royal Apothic. Their Cuppa Cuppa Tea Mask packaging is simply to die for!

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewShortstacks Birthday Cake Pancake and Waffle Mix | $8.00
Yum! Usually I find birthday cake flavored things to be very hit or miss, and this is a definite hit. It’s not overly sweet or cloying and the pancakes were light and fluffy. Out of the past several boxes, this is hands down my favorite food item. It also fits nicely with the theme of back to school and morning routines.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewHappy Jackson YAYLUNCH Lunch Box | $10.00
I’m not the greatest at packing my own lunch, so hopefully having this box will get me slightly more motivated. The striped elastic belly band that holds the box together is really adorable, but I wish the box could stay closed without the band. I feel like it’s something I could easily lose and then the box would look kind of weird (there’s grooves for where the elastic goes) and be less functional.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 Review

Since there are no compartments and the box is not leak-proof, I imagine this being ideal for a sandwich. I wish it were more versatile, but I am still happy to try it out. Could be cute for packing dry snacks too.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 Review

American Colors Clothing Plaid Scarf | $79.00
I wish there were more color options, since I love the red scarves so much more on their website. I’m generally really happy with the scarves that I receive from POPSUGAR, but this one doesn’t go very well with anything in my wardrobe. Since this color scheme isn’t really for me, I’m going to pass it along to a friend of mine who can pull it off. That’s kind of the great part about being a subscription box junkie: I always have gifts for my friends!

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewBest Day Ever Mug | $12.00
I don’t know who did the original art for this, but it seems like a lot of different brands have this same phrase, typography, and layout. I’ve seen a slightly cheaper gold version of this same mug made by a different company on Nordstrom that I like more, and wish we had gotten that one instead. Does POPSUGAR just have an obsession with cobalt blue? I feel like everything they send us is this same color. Don’t get me wrong, I like cobalt blue…but after the first handful of blue items (crossbody, umbrella, stationery, clutch, the list could go on) a girl starts craving different colors!

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewMeri Meri Toot Sweet Pink Stripe Napkins| $6.00
Never thought I would be excited to get napkins, but these are really pretty and unique! I can’t imagine when I’ll use them (maybe a nice brunch or girls night?) but I’m looking forward to it. If fancy paper napkins aren’t for you, there are a lot of DIY ideas on Pinterest for what you can do with them. I’m especially digging the idea of turning them into little banner garlands.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewMy Yoga Works 3 Month Trial | $45.00
I’ve been so lazy lately and skipping a lot of my yoga and barre classes, so perhaps this will help kick me back onto the routine. I imagine this service is perfect for someone with a busy schedule or who likes to workout at night (I’m definitely guilty of this), since you can access the classes 24/7. All my classes are early in the morning before work, which is part of the reason why I’ve been skipping so often. Sleeping in is just too tempting! Can’t wait to try out some online yoga.

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 ReviewFolgers Iced Cafe Caramel Macchiato Flavored Coffee Drink Concentrate | $5.00
This is listed as an extra, and even though it’s not terribly exciting, I think it’s a good choice for a back to school themed box. The bottle is much smaller than I imagined it would be: this thing could easily fit in your pocket. I’m thinking back to college days and secretly glad we didn’t have these around. I probably would have been hooked on this stuff…

POPSUGAR Must Have August 2015 Review

The total value for this box is $201.00, which is high even for POPSUGAR standards. However, it’s not one of my favorites. Guess it’s just even more proof that high value doesn’t always mean customer satisfaction! Some of my favorite boxes have actually been the low value ones. Interesting how that works out, right?

While I definitely found some useful stuff and think the items match well with the theme, I didn’t love every item and especially wasn’t a huge fan of the big ticket item. Nonetheless I think it’s a solid curation and it sounds like lots of people really liked this month, so I’m happy for them and excited for September!

Rachel Zoe Box of Style Fall 2015 Box Spoiler!Isn’t it pretty?? I really adore that we’re getting 2 different strap colors that will go with everything. I already ordered 2 of the Fall box (don’t judge me!!) so I’m simply dying for September to get here already.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample Options

Such a cute and clever concept for the Birchbox August 2015 box design! It definitely feels like Summer just looking at it, doesn’t it?

I didn’t get a Birchbox last month because I forgot to renew my subscription in time, so this is actually the first box from my new annual subscription.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsAll the props to their amazing design team!

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsBeauty Protector Protect & Detangle | $2.75
I’ve received this before and really love it. In fact, I currently own the full sized version and use it all the time! It’s a leave-in mist that provides protection against UV rays, minimizes frizz, and keeps color from fading. It’s one of my favorite hair care products to gift when the holidays roll around because it is paraben-free, sulfate-free, 100% vegan, and suitable for all hair types. Plus all Beauty Protector products always smell so amazing, I’d use this spray for the fragrance alone!

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample Options

The Balm Cosmetics Balm Desert Bronzer | $2.60
Bronzer always lasts forever with me since I use it rarely and sparingly, but lately I’ve been experimenting with contouring to make a dent in my bronzer collection. I found this one to lack enough pigmentation for contouring purposes, but since it’s so light I can use it on my face without worrying that I’ll accidentally over apply.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsI really enjoy the packaging with The Balm samples! They’re always so cute.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsSupergoop! Daily Correct CC Cream SPF 35+ | $2.05
This is such a tiny sample! It’s a shame since I really like this CC cream and would have enjoyed having more to play with. The level of coverage is just perfect for a no-makeup look and the high SPF is great for Summer. When I wear it as a primer it keeps my foundation in place and hides my pores while staying lightweight.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsR + Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo | $7.36
This was my sample choice for August, and I’m very pleased with it. Somehow I’ve managed to go through most of my dry shampoo stash (omg, right?!) so I was looking to try something new. I really enjoyed the R + Co shampoo and conditioner samples that I received in a previous Birchbox, so I figured I would probably like some of their other products too. The Death Valley dry shampoo works very well and I like the scent–it reminds me a lot of Drybar’s hairspray, another favorite of mine. I think it’s on the pricey side for dry shampoo, but would be a nice splurge item. Also isn’t this packaging to die for?

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample OptionsDr. Jart+ Dermask Vital Hydra Solution Deep Hydration Sheet Mask | $6.00
Always happy to get a sheet mask in my box! Dr. Jart+ is one of those brands that I always see and hear things about but rarely get to sample for myself (with the exception of the BB cream, which I seem to get all the time), so I’m happy to try something new. I left the mask on for 25 minutes and my skin felt so smooth and soft afterwards. At $6, I think it’s a really good price for the quality.

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample Options

My box comes to a total of $20.76, which is on the lower end for Birchbox. However, I’m pleased with the dry shampoo and sheet mask, which are two new discoveries for me. I am also glad to get another travel size of the Beauty Protector. Overall, I would say it’s a good month but definitely not one of my favorites.

Now onto September Sample Choice! Your options are:

  • Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo + Conditioner
  • POP Beauty Eye Shadow Trio in Sugar Plum
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Perfect Brow Pencil Mini in Medium Brown
  • Dr. Brandt Pores No More Cleanser

Pictures shown below are full sized

Birchbox August 2015 Review plus September 2015 Sample Options

Or, you can opt for the Customer Favorites Box:

  • Beauty Protector Protect & Shampoo
  • Beauty Protector Protect & Condition
  • Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Hot Cloth Cleanser
  • Harvey Prince Hello
  • Marcelle Mini Waterproof Eyeliner in Mulberry

I’m not sure what to go with! One one hand I really like the Anastasia Brow Pencil and Dr. Brandt Pores No More Cleanser, but I also want to try the Beauty Protector Shampoo and Conditioner and the Liz Earle Cleanser is amazing! What are you thinking of getting? If you’re on the fence, I definitely recommend trying the Dr. Brandt cleanser. I got a full sized one a few weeks ago and have been loving it!
