Beauty DNA September 2015 Box Review plus Sale at Gilt City!

I’m completely obsessed with my newest subscription, Beauty DNA! Last month I received an awesome 3Lab face cream that has become my holy grail go-to moisturizer. It’s seriously my favorite skincare discovery in years, I’m not even exaggerating.

Beauty DNA is a monthly subscription service that sends you one full sized beauty item based on your profile. When you first sign up, you fill out a pretty detailed profile on your preferences, and the experts at Beauty DNA will match you with a product that they think works best for you. For $25/month, you’ll receive an item from one of three categories: skincare, hair products, and body. Usually they alternate what category you receive between months, so you won’t end up getting a bunch of hair products consecutively.

Since I’ve had such a great experience, I’ve actually started gifting these subscriptions to my friends. I hope they have just as much luck as I have with their matches!

First look!

Each month you receive a personalized card explaining why the product was chosen for you. It incorporates elements from the questionnaire you fill out when you first subscribe. I’m consistently impressed by how specific they are and how many factors they consider.

Epionce Intense Defense Serum Anti-Aging and Repair | $136.00
Wow, another amazing high value item! I really didn’t think they would be sending me another expensive product so soon after my $140 cream from last month, but they totally did! I’ve never heard of this brand before and they seem to be a relatively new company, but I see lots of great reviews for their products on Dermstore so I have high hopes.

Beauty DNA September 2015 Box Review plus Sale at Gilt City!

I’ve only used it for 2 days now and so far I really like how gentle and non-greasy the formula feels. The serum goes on really smooth and silky and absorbs quickly, with barely any fragrance. One thing that I really love about BeautyDNA is that all the items are full sized, which gives you a good idea of whether or not will work for you. I hate it when I get a tiny single application sample of skincare, because it really doesn’t tell me anything.

Glytone Step-Up Cleanse Mild Gel Wash | $4.60
I think this is a sample size product, since the full size seems to be a really large bottle. Since this is an extra, I don’t mind that it’s small. It has AMAZING reviews on Amazon, full of people raving that this is the best face cleanser ever, so I really couldn’t wait to try it!

Beauty DNA September 2015 Box Review plus Sale at Gilt City!

Since I’ve also only tried this product 4 times (twice a day for two days), I can’t attest to how effective it will be long term. But so far I’ve been very happy with this cleanser. It cleans well but doesn’t feel harsh at all, and doesn’t have any irritating fragrance or tingly/burning sensation on my face. Afterwards my skin feels really smooth and fresh, like I exfoliated except without the harsh abrasion of actual exfoliation. I’m going to finish this sample and if it works out, I’m going to buy the full size for sure!

Beauty DNA September 2015 Box Review plus Sale at Gilt City!

My box has a value of $140.60, which is really incredible for a $25 box. But even more valuable is that I’m discovering new products that really work for me that I know I never would have found otherwise. Like I said earlier, that 3Lab cream from last month is my new holy grail moisturizer! I’m honestly completely blown away by BeautyDNA and wish I had subscribed sooner. This one is a keeper, for sure!

And guess what else? Gilt City is having a sale of 2 month and 4 month subscriptions to BeautyDNA for $29.00 and $58.00 respectively. That’s already a 42% savings, but if you’re a new member of Gilt City, you can get an even bigger discount.

Barkbox September 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

We’ve had our September BarkBox for a few days now and it’s been a lifesaver. This week I’ve been super busy at work and don’t have much time to take Maddie to the dog park as often as she would like. So to compensate, I bribe her with new treats and toys. I like to think it’s a pretty fair trade. Having new doggie items arrive on my doorstep when I need it the most reminds me of why I subscribed to BarkBox in the first place. The value isn’t as incredible as say, a POPSUGAR box, but you really can’t beat that convenience! You never know when you need to have some extra toys and treats on hand.

BarkBox is $29/month if you do the month-to-month plan, but it goes down to only $18/month if you sign up for the whole year! We sprung for the whole year since it was such a great deal. Before getting BarkBox we were probably dropping between $30 to $50 a month at pet stores, and now one box usually lasts us through the month. You can use my link for 10% off any subscription. And if you use my link, they’ll donate a free box to the Bark-N-Rest Retirement Center! It’s a great cause and I’m pleased that BarkBox gives back to the doggie community!

You can choose different sizes when you order, and we get the Large box (for dogs over 50 lbs). Even though Maddie is about 46 lbs, she has the energy and strength of a much larger dog so we always size up for toys. BarkBox always has a theme for each month, and this month is Bedtime Story.

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ears | $2.50
Sourced and smoked in the USA from a single ingredient. It’s literally just a smoked pig ear! We always get at least one chew in each box, and Maddie is a big fan. She’s not picky with her chews and goes through them really quickly. I generally try to save them for when I groom her. I used this pig ear to distract her for a long overdue nail clipping 🙂

Swag Company Shooting Star | $14.00
So adorable! It’s made exclusively for BarkBox and features squeakers inside. The stitching is reinforced for durability, though it doesn’t stand up to Maddie’s destruction skills. Very few toys do. But I think this one would hold up very well for your average dog.

The size is perfect for Maddie and she’s been happily tossing this thing around.

Organicfuls Chamomile, Honey, and Duck Treats | $8.00
I love that they translated the bedtime theme to the treats as well! Chamomile treats for dogs? Just perfect. This brand is new to me, but I like what I see. All their ingredients are sourced from the USA and their treats are USDA certified organic. It’s a very short ingredients list, is completely soy free, grain free, and GMO free. Bottom line: it definitely looks like a very wholesome treat! Maddie also loved the taste.

Delca Lamb and Kale Treats | $8.00
As with almost all the treats we get from BarkBox, this is another made in the USA product. I love that they source from only the US and Canada. It definitely gives peace of mind for what my dog is consuming. These treats are soft and perfect for training. They’re also grain free, which is good to know if your dog has dietary restrictions.

Petmate ChuckIt! Max Glow Ball | $9.00
I was seriously just about to buy one of these for Maddie! She loves to play fetch at night at the dog park near our house, but since the lighting is so dim she’s always losing sight of the tennis ball while it’s mid-air. Now she can keep track of it better and it also helps me locate the ball when it’s time to go home. I also think the softer texture of the ball is just perfect for her, since she’s been obsessed with her new toy. Even more obsessed than she is with tennis balls! I am absolutely buying more and stocking up! And also, it’s another perfect addition to the bedtime theme, right?

Barkbox September 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Overall this was a killer box. I thought the curation for the theme was excellent and I loved all the items. The new organic brand and glow in the dark ball were fantastic discoveries! The overall value comes out to $41.50, which I’m more than happy with. Personally, I think BarkBox consistently delivers thoughtfully curated and high quality items month after month. So far I haven’t been disappointed by any month yet, and I’ve been subscribed for almost a year now. They also have great customer service and stand behind all their products, so if you don’t like something you can always get a replacement. Just like always, I’m looking forward to the next box already!

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Sneak Peek!

Whew, it’s been a good spoiler day! We got one from Rachel Zoe Box of Style and now we have one for the October POPSUGAR Must Have as well!

Each box will contain a copy of Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling. I’m assuming we’re receiving the hardcover, which I really love. Her last book was funny and insightful and overall just such a good read. I have nothing but the highest expectations for this new one as well. I love pretty much all things Mindy; she’s absolutely hilarious!

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

It’s always a treat to open my mailbox and find a little pink Birchbox inside amidst all the bills and junk mail. They seem to be doing mostly custom designed boxes for each month now, and I can’t remember the last time I received a plain brown box from them. This month is stunning, as always. And it was actually semi-designed by customers! I think they held a contest where people could submit ideas, and they picked a few that they liked and collaborated to create the September box.

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

Gorgeous presentation. Birchbox is always a really good subscription to gift, since they have lovely designs and are well known enough to be a good “gateway” subscription. (Yes, I just compared subscription boxes to drugs. But like, in a good way, if that’s possible!) Plus you can’t beat the value. You can gift a whole year for only $110.

Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo | $7.40
This was my sample choice for this month. I was really excited to finally try a Davines shampoo since I always hear great things about the brand. It smells really really good and washes out well, leaving behind a smooth and silky feeling. None of that greasy residue feeling I sometimes get from other shampoos! I’m also really pleased with the size of the sample: 2.5 oz! Even with my long hair it’s enough to last me over a week, which I appreciate. So far, this is a keeper!

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample OptionsDavines Love Smoothing Conditioner | $1.37
Given the size of the shampoo sample, I was really disappointed in the size of the conditioner. It would have been really nice to get two samples of the same size, and if anything I feel like the sizes should have been reversed. I always use more conditioner than I do shampoo! This little sample only contains 1 application, or maybe 2 if you have short hair and you’re careful about preventing the foil sample from spilling. With that being said, I do like this conditioner. It left my hair soft and smooth and easy to manage, and even when I let it air dry I didn’t have any problems with frizz.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive | $5.06
I’ve tried this peel before, so knew what to expect. It’s not my favorite product out there but definitely a solid choice and perfect for sensitive skin types. If you’ve had issues with harsh peels in the past, this might be the one for you. It’s gentle and can be used up to twice a week, and is derived from organic ingredients. Personally I think it’s not as effective as some of the similarly priced products on the market, but it definitely is beloved by lots of people who swear by it.

POP Beauty Eye Shadow Trio Sugar Plum | $2.16
I didn’t actually open this trio, since it was packaged so nicely with the shrink wrap and I need eyeshadow like a bullet in my head. This will be going to a friend of mine who adores purples and lavenders. I obviously can’t comment on the quality of the shadow itself, but I will say that I’m really happy with the size of the sample! It even comes with a little applicator and the palette feels very sturdy. I can definitely see this as a travel trio that will last for a long time.

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

English Laundry Eau de Parfum Signature For Her | $2.00
I’m very rarely pleased to get a perfume sample since I seem to get so many and they’re just not all that exciting. But on a more positive note I actually like this scent: it’s got a sweetness and richness but also notes of bright florals to liven it up. Since it’s an eau de parfum, a little goes a long way and the scent lasts for a very long time.

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser | $2.00
Grapefruit always smells soo good in a face cleanser, and this is no exception. It just smells really fresh and clean, which I love in my morning routine. I’ve always had great experiences with Malin + Goetz, so I was really happy to try one of their products that I’m not familiar with. This cleanser is super gentle and can be used daily, another great one for people with sensitive skin.

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer | $1.15
Glad to get this moisturizer to go with the cleanser. It’s another Malin + Goetz product that is completely new to me, so I’m happy to be discovering new items from a familiar brand. The moisturizer is really lightweight and quick to absorb, and it’s oil free so it is perfect for sensitive or acne prone skin. Since this moisturizer is so light, it works really well for a humid place like Houston. I’m always so oily during the day that I can’t imagine using a heavy cream moisturizer for anything other than night time!

Birchbox September 2015 Review plus October 2015 Sample Options

So I got a bunch of smaller samples this month, and my total value comes out to $21.14, which is relatively low for Birchbox. However, I got 7 different samples, all of which can be reviewed for a total of 70 points. That’s equal to $7 credit in the Birchbox shop! So if I factor in the credit, I really only spent $3 on this box and I’m very satisfied. I’m really glad I chose the Davines shampoo, as it’s my favorite item in the entire box.
