It’s always a treat to open my mailbox and find a little pink Birchbox inside amidst all the bills and junk mail. They seem to be doing mostly custom designed boxes for each month now, and I can’t remember the last time I received a plain brown box from them. This month is stunning, as always. And it was actually semi-designed by customers! I think they held a contest where people could submit ideas, and they picked a few that they liked and collaborated to create the September box.
Gorgeous presentation. Birchbox is always a really good subscription to gift, since they have lovely designs and are well known enough to be a good “gateway” subscription. (Yes, I just compared subscription boxes to drugs. But like, in a good way, if that’s possible!) Plus you can’t beat the value. You can gift a whole year for only $110.
Davines Love Smoothing Shampoo | $7.40
This was my sample choice for this month. I was really excited to finally try a Davines shampoo since I always hear great things about the brand. It smells really really good and washes out well, leaving behind a smooth and silky feeling. None of that greasy residue feeling I sometimes get from other shampoos! I’m also really pleased with the size of the sample: 2.5 oz! Even with my long hair it’s enough to last me over a week, which I appreciate. So far, this is a keeper!
Davines Love Smoothing Conditioner | $1.37
Given the size of the shampoo sample, I was really disappointed in the size of the conditioner. It would have been really nice to get two samples of the same size, and if anything I feel like the sizes should have been reversed. I always use more conditioner than I do shampoo! This little sample only contains 1 application, or maybe 2 if you have short hair and you’re careful about preventing the foil sample from spilling. With that being said, I do like this conditioner. It left my hair soft and smooth and easy to manage, and even when I let it air dry I didn’t have any problems with frizz.
Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Sensitive | $5.06
I’ve tried this peel before, so knew what to expect. It’s not my favorite product out there but definitely a solid choice and perfect for sensitive skin types. If you’ve had issues with harsh peels in the past, this might be the one for you. It’s gentle and can be used up to twice a week, and is derived from organic ingredients. Personally I think it’s not as effective as some of the similarly priced products on the market, but it definitely is beloved by lots of people who swear by it.
POP Beauty Eye Shadow Trio Sugar Plum | $2.16
I didn’t actually open this trio, since it was packaged so nicely with the shrink wrap and I need eyeshadow like a bullet in my head. This will be going to a friend of mine who adores purples and lavenders. I obviously can’t comment on the quality of the shadow itself, but I will say that I’m really happy with the size of the sample! It even comes with a little applicator and the palette feels very sturdy. I can definitely see this as a travel trio that will last for a long time.
English Laundry Eau de Parfum Signature For Her | $2.00
I’m very rarely pleased to get a perfume sample since I seem to get so many and they’re just not all that exciting. But on a more positive note I actually like this scent: it’s got a sweetness and richness but also notes of bright florals to liven it up. Since it’s an eau de parfum, a little goes a long way and the scent lasts for a very long time.
Malin + Goetz Grapefruit Face Cleanser | $2.00
Grapefruit always smells soo good in a face cleanser, and this is no exception. It just smells really fresh and clean, which I love in my morning routine. I’ve always had great experiences with Malin + Goetz, so I was really happy to try one of their products that I’m not familiar with. This cleanser is super gentle and can be used daily, another great one for people with sensitive skin.
Malin + Goetz Vitamin E Face Moisturizer | $1.15
Glad to get this moisturizer to go with the cleanser. It’s another Malin + Goetz product that is completely new to me, so I’m happy to be discovering new items from a familiar brand. The moisturizer is really lightweight and quick to absorb, and it’s oil free so it is perfect for sensitive or acne prone skin. Since this moisturizer is so light, it works really well for a humid place like Houston. I’m always so oily during the day that I can’t imagine using a heavy cream moisturizer for anything other than night time!
So I got a bunch of smaller samples this month, and my total value comes out to $21.14, which is relatively low for Birchbox. However, I got 7 different samples, all of which can be reviewed for a total of 70 points. That’s equal to $7 credit in the Birchbox shop! So if I factor in the credit, I really only spent $3 on this box and I’m very satisfied. I’m really glad I chose the Davines shampoo, as it’s my favorite item in the entire box.
