Barkbox October 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Whew, it’s been a hell of a weekend! Hurricane Patricia brought lots of rain and flooding to Houston, so Maddie has been trapped indoors all weekend. Luckily she had a brand new BarkBox to tear into, which I’m so grateful for. I think that’s really one of the best parts about a more practical subscription service like BarkBox: the convenience is unbeatable. Since Maddie is so destructive, we still buy toys for her from stores, but it’s been wonderful to have a monthly box full of toys and treats for backup and in case I’m too busy to go shopping.

BarkBox is $29/month if you do the month-to-month plan, but it goes down to only $18/month if you sign up for the whole year! We sprung for the whole year since it was such a great deal. Before getting BarkBox we were probably dropping between $30 to $50 a month at pet stores, and now one box usually lasts us through the month. You can use my link for 10% off any subscription. And if you use my link, they’ll donate a free box to the Bark-N-Rest Retirement Center! It’s a great cause and I’m pleased that BarkBox gives back to the doggie community!

You can choose different sizes when you order, and we get the Large box (for dogs over 50 lbs). Even though Maddie is about 46 lbs, she has the energy and strength of a much larger dog so we always size up for toys. BarkBox always has a theme for each month, and this month is Halloween.

Butcher’s Block Trachea | $5.00
Every box usually includes at least one chew, and we’ve received numerous tracheas by this point. It’s always a good way to keep Maddie busy and she loves chewing on these, so we have no complaints about getting more! It’s made in the USA out of 100% natural beef. I usually use them as distractions during nail clipping sessions or as a special post-bath treat.

Rattling Ricky | $13.00
I love Halloween so I was really excited to get some fun themed toys for this month! This toy is super cute and features a lot of things that Maddie loves. The wings are stuffed with crinkle plastic, and the body is made out of a plastic bottle stuffed with little beads of cornstarch that rattle when thrown. I love that the beads are safe for consumption in case your dog (like mine) is able to actually puncture the plastic bottle. You’d be surprised how many toys aren’t as safe! I really do appreciate that attention to detail.

She thoroughly enjoyed making lots of noise with her new toy.

Barkbox October 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Caru Duck Recipe Baked Bites | $9.00
We’ve received Caru treats before, and I’m very satisfied with the quality. Duck is the first ingredient for these soft bites, and it doesn’t contain any wheat, corn, soy, or animal by-products. The treats are made in the USA, prepared in small batches and naturally preserved.

Count Barkula | $15.00
Yay for squeakers! This super cute toy has 12 squeakers, and since each squeaker is sewn in an individual compartment it actually lasted a good amount of time with my dog. She had a blast with this thing! The size is perfect for her since she’s a pretty large dog, and she was able to drag it around the house and cuddle with it in her bed. I highly recommend all the “squeaker mat” style toys that Barkshop has. We’ve always had a good experience with them!

Barkbox October 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

So excited!! She had an amazing time thrashing around and pulling the squeakers out.

Barkbox October 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

No Grainers NYC Jerky Bites | $7.00
I can’t find this exact treat on BarkShop, but a similar one from the same company for the $7 price. These treats are small, so they’re perfect for training or putting inside treat toys. It’s grain free, corn free, soy free, and all the ingredients are from the USA.

Barkbox October 2015 Review plus 10% Off Code

Overall we got a $49.00 value from this box, which I am very happy with. The added convenience of getting it shipped to the door is just icing on the cake! Every month I love the curation and I think the toys just get more and more adorable as time goes on. All the treats are always very safe, made in the USA or Canada, and feature high quality ingredients. I’m always so excited to see what the theme for the next month will be!

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Yay for another beautiful box from Birchbox! I have quite a nice collection of their gorgeous box designs now. I need to find a good way to reuse them! I’m thinking maybe for Christmas I can repurpose them as gift boxes or something? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know! Now onto the review:

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash | $8.48
This was my sample choice for this month, and I’m really happy with it. I’ve tried Benefit’s latest mascara before and really enjoyed the formula, so I jumped at the chance to get another sample of it. If you have straight lashes like me, I highly recommend giving this mascara a chance! It does a good job of curling and actually holds the curl throughout the day. The wand is not as “stabby” as Benefit’s They’re Real (sorry if that was a bad description) so it doesn’t hurt my eyelids like They’re Real sometimes used to.

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk Natural Tint | $6.25
Another product that I’ve sampled before through Birchbox, and luckily it’s one that I like. Somehow I’ve managed to go through my collection of dry shampoo recently (I know!!!) so I am actually happy to get more. This one is tinted for brunettes and has a really light natural fragrance and works well for me.

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Avene Soothing Moisture Mask | $2.45
I’m always happy to try new masks and this is a new brand for me. Unlike most of my other masks, this one is a leave on kind. You apply a thin layer on your face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe off the excess. It’s so hard for me not to rinse my face after a mask! While I thought the smell was pleasant, I didn’t like how my face felt sort of sticky afterwards. I think if you have really dry skin this will help you moisturize, but overall it didn’t really do much for me and wasn’t worth the sticky feeling.

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Manna Kadar Lip Locked in Lucky | $1.80
Is it just me or do I feel like we get a lot of Manna Kadar lip products from Birchbox? I swear this is like my 4th one or something. On the bright side, the color is a perfect nude for me and gives me a really nice natural look. The stain properties of this gloss aren’t as prominent with this lighter color, but I know that the bolder colors act as more of a stain. For a gloss it has great staying power without being sticky.

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream | $4.80
I wish this sample were bigger! I think all skincare samples should be enough for a week to really give you a good idea of how your skin will react. This is a lightweight formula that absorbs quickly and has a very light fragrance. I really like how this moisturizer feels on my face, but I also keep reading reviews about how it can make you break out after continued usage. This tiny little sample only lasted me 3 days, and I’m a bit nervous about splurging for a full size.

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Overall value for October comes to $23.78, a value I’m happy with. It wasn’t an amazing box for me but I definitely got my money’s worth. Now onto November Sample Choice!  You can choose a LOC full sized product, which is really exciting. Your options are:

  • LOC Vibrant Matte Lipstick Stick (Choice of Wildest Dreams, Glam Life, or First Kiss)
  • LOC One and Done Shadow Stick

Birchbox October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Sample Options

Or you can choose the curated box:

  • Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo
  • Shiseido Ultimune Eye Power Infusing Concentrate
  • Jouer Essential Lip Enhancer Conditioning Lip Treatment
  • Avene Hydrance Optimale Hydrating Serum
  • LOC One & Done Shadow Stick

I’m thinking I’ll go with the curated box next month. I love Living Proof and Shiseido, and the full sized LOC shadow stick sounds really promising.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

When it rains, it pours! The past two weeks I had no boxes coming in and I was slowly dying of subscription box withdrawal, and suddenly within the past few days I got four boxes. Up first is my absolute favorite: the POPSUGAR Must Have box. Hopefully within the next couple of days I’ll have the other 3 out: Bespoke, Birchbox, and Barkbox. Stay tuned!

I love that for October, POPSUGAR donated money to Right Action For Women, a nonprofit that helps women with a high risk for breast cancer afford proper screening. It would be helpful to know exactly how much was donated, but even the smallest amount can make a difference. And since there was no obligation for POPSUGAR to donate anything at all, I think it was a really wonderful thing for them to do on behalf of their subscribers.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling | $25.00 ($15.00 on Amazon)
I adore Mindy, so when this spoiler came out I was thrilled. I was going to buy this book anyways, so getting it in a subscription box was a really awesome win for me. Bonus points for getting it in hardcover! If you like Mindy Kaling and her sense of humor, this book won’t disappoint. Even though I like her first book better, this one was still hilarious, insightful, and a really fun read.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Savvy Sleepers Luxury Satin Pillowcase | $36.00
I’ve always heard amazing things about satin pillowcases and how wonderful it is for your hair, but never actually purchased one for myself. Excited to see if it makes a big difference for me. I really like the idea of having a secret pocket to stash little goodies in, so that detail makes this pillowcase much more interesting for me. I’m also happy to see that it’s machine washable and easy to care for. However, I do think the $36 value is pretty absurd.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Richer Poorer Hope Slipper Socks | $15.00
In addition to the donation made by POPSUGAR, these socks (POPSUGAR exclusive!) are also included in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I think the slipper socks are a good choice because they’re so cozy and perfect for colder weather, and also because they’re perfect gifts for people who are undergoing cancer treatment. One of my friends is currently going through chemotherapy and LOVES these socks because they have grips at the bottom to prevent her from slipping, and are way more comfortable than actually wearing shoes while she’s in the hospital. So if you got a box this month but don’t care for the socks yourself, I would highly recommend donating them! They’re an absolute favorite in the hospital.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Easy, Tiger Brown Paper Liquor Bag Set | $8.00
These were a little confusing to me at first, because I wasn’t really sure when I would actually use them. They seem a little too casual for gifting wine, and also too big for covering up your beer for outdoor drinking. Perhaps POPSUGAR is telling me I should be drinking an entire bottle of wine next time I’m at the park?

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

I will say that the patterns are really cute and I’m going to try my best to find a use for them! Perhaps it’s time to arrange for an outdoor wine day with the girls…

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

The Honest Company Sea Salt + Sugar Body Scrub | $16.95
I subscribe to The Honest Company bundles, but this scrub isn’t one of the items available for the bundles so I’ve never had the chance to try it before. It’s got a really great vanilla lavender fragrance that isn’t overwhelming, and leaves my skin soft and moisturized. The scrub isn’t too course, but has just enough grit to really exfoliate. I’m a big fan! Good thing this container is generously sized, I think it will last me a long time. Be careful if you’re using it in the shower and you don’t have a grippy mat: this stuff makes your tub really slippery!

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Belgian Boys De Stroopwafel | $1.59
Yes! Finally, an unhealthy delicious snack in my PSMH box! So good with coffee, it’s completely addictive. The texture of the waffle paired with the chewy caramel is fantastic. Each pack comes with 2 waffles but I probably could have finished a dozen easily if I had it. If you check out Belgian Boys’ website all their other products sound equally delicious. I may or may not have already purchased a huge box of sweets…

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product | $4.50
This is listed as a special extra, and I’m glad to get it. I already use this product for my hair and really like the results. It adds shine and reduces frizz and gives my hair a really soft texture. It’s probably my favorite drugstore hair product! I’m always happy to have an extra travel sized one on hand.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Danielle Stevens Monogram Gift Card | $40.00
I don’t count this as a real gift card since it only works in the “Personalized” section of the online shop and the cheapest item I found is this bracelet for $48.00. You would still have to pay for shipping on top of that. Nothing on the site really stands out to me so I don’t think I will use this card.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Overall I think it was a satisfactory month for me but I have definitely had much better months. The value comes to $107.04, but I feel like the actual value is lower since the book can be found for cheaper and the pillowcase value seems very inflated. However, a donation was also made for breast cancer screening so that does add a little more value for me. Bottom line: I’ll use all the items and most of it was very practical for me, so I have no complaints. It just wasn’t super exciting, but that just makes me more eager to see what November has in store.

Speaking of November, we have a spoiler out:

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Review plus November 2015 Spoiler

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Happy first day of October, everyone! It’s finally feeling like Fall down here and I couldn’t be happier. Bring on the pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters! Kicking off October is a review for a new-to-me subscription that I know has been around for a while: Cate & Chloe VIP. I’ve read good things on Liz’s website but have never had a chance to try them for myself, so I was thrilled with the opportunity to do so. Cate & Chloe kindly sent me their October box for review, and I really feel like I lucked out with the month!

Cate & Chloe VIP is a jewelry subscription service that sends out 2 pieces of jewelry each month, tailored to your preferences. They have a whole range of jewelry styles and various metals, so you can let them know if you prefer silver over gold, or if you don’t have pierced ears, and they will work around that. The month to month subscription price is $39.99, and the price goes down if you commit to a longer subscription. And guess what? If you sign up for October’s box, they’re making it extra special: 15% of the VIP sales will be donated to American Cancer Society to help fight breast cancer. Love that they support such a wonderful cause!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

First look. It’s all packaged really well with tissue paper, so I can see this being a good box to gift. All the jewelry also comes in individual little boxes so it’s very easy for gifting.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Each month they include some styling tips, and explain what the “perk of the month” is. In the past I’ve seen nail polish, shampoo, and other smaller things, so you can usually expect something of that sort. I’ve also seen really stunning bonus jewelry items too, so I guess some months you get extra lucky!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Each item comes in one of these boxes. It’s sturdy and cute enough to be gifted without any additional wrapping. I’m already thinking of Christmas and how cute these would be in stockings!

Rachel “Beautiful” Rose Gold Bracelet | $125.00
Whoa, check out that price tag. While it’s a beautiful piece and well made for costume jewelry, I think the value is inflated. The style is simple but classic, and can be worn with all types of outfits. I think this is a piece that can easily be dressed up or down. It’s really versatile and I don’t have anything else like this in my current collection, so I’m very happy.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

The rose gold is absolutely gorgeous and I love the fit of this bracelet. It’s roomy without being as big as a bangle, and I can use my laptop just fine with it on. Usually my biggest issue with bangles is how much noise it makes when it I’m typing. Anyways, this bracelet is so pretty I’ve been wearing it all the time and have gotten compliments on it already!

Brooklyn “Sublime” Leaf Stud Earrings | $59.00
I mentioned really loving stud earrings, so I was delighted to find this pair in my box. The quality is great for costume jewelry (seems to be a trend with Cate & Chloe pieces!) and I foresee it becoming a go-to in my collection.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Cute, right? They’re small enough for an every day look but are more exciting than your typical studs.

Cate & Chloe Makeup Brush Set | $25.00 (?)
This is a bonus item for October and all new subscribers for this month will get this in their first box. I’m loving the travel case that rolls up and ties with the hot pink ribbon. It’s pretty and totally functional, and is an elegant solution for travel.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

I can already picture myself bringing this with me when I travel, or just keeping it around as a back up set of brushes. The quality is decent and I’m impressed by the range of tools! I was imagining just 2 or 3 brushes, not 6!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

The perk of the month is this pink “Fight Like A Girl” wristband to show support for breast cancer. Since 15% of the sales from this month are going to support cancer research, I think it’s a very fitting bonus item. I’ll be rocking it for an upcoming run my company is doing for breast cancer!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Overall verdict: I think it’s a really good value for high quality pieces. I’m calculating a $209.00 value, assuming the brush set is around $25.00. Even though I don’t think that’s a fair assessment of the value since the prices do seem inflated to me, I think it’s definitely worth more than the subscription price. Their designs look fantastic and seem to have a classic timeless style to them, which I love. And you can really narrow down what you will receive by setting your preferences. Additional bonus: their customer service is top notch!

If you’re looking for a jewelry subscription that values quality over quantity, this is a great choice. I think it’s an especially good choice if you aren’t too crazy with your jewelry preferences (huge statement necklaces, super bright colors, etc.) and want to try something new without getting something you can’t wear.

Interested in signing up for this? Use code SECRETLYHOARDING15 for 15% off your subscription. Expires 11/30. And don’t forget: October is a great month to try it since you’ll get the makeup brushes and you will be supporting cancer research! Win win.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Sneak Peek #2!

2nd spoiler for October’s POPSUGAR Must Have box is out! We already know each box will contain a copy of Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2015 Sneak Peek!

And each box will also contain a Sea Salt + Sugar Body Scrub from The Honest Company! I LOVE Honest Company products (I swear by that healing balm stuff!) and this is one that isn’t included in any of their bundles so I haven’t had a chance to try yet. So excited to use it! I’ve heard amazing things about this scrub and couldn’t be happier with this spoiler.
