I think I must be one of the lucky few who got their boxes shipped very quickly! I personally wasn’t even expecting my box to get here so early. It was a complete surprise to find this on my doorstep yesterday. Naturally I couldn’t wait to tear into it and snap a ton of pictures, so here goes!
The Rachel Zoe Box of Style is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a box filled with fashion, beauty, and lifestyle items curated by Rachel Zoe! It’s a quarterly subscription, so it ships in March (Spring), July (Summer), September (Fall), and December (Winter). Every box promises $300+ value for only $100, or you can sign up for a whole year for $350. One thing I really like about this subscription is that it contains a “hero item” for each box that you know about beforehand. It’s the highest value item in the box and it’s generally announced well in advance, giving you plenty of time to decide if you want to purchase the box or not. I think it’s a smart way to ensure your customers are satisfied, because the hero item is always worth more than the cost of the box itself. It’s much easier to justify spending $100 when you know you’ll be getting at least one high value item that you actually want.
The packaging is so luxe and the outer storage box is sturdy. It ships in a cardboard box so the black box arrives pristine. I like to reuse these boxes for storing my craft supplies and other random knick knacks.
The little booklet is always surprisingly informative and thoughtful. For each box I read the entire thing and discover some new tips and ideas. There’s also promo codes for each featured brand at the bottom of each page. I’m very tempted to use the 30% off at Jules Smith! (code ZOEJULES30, valid through April 1, 2016.)
All the items are wrapped individually in tissue paper. It definitely feels like a mini version of Christmas morning.
Shaffer LA Leather Bucket Bag | $150.00
This is the “hero item” of the box. Even though bucket bags are not something I would buy for myself, if Rachel Zoe says it’s fashionable, who am I to argue?! I was also drawn to the small size, since I love to use small crossbody bags on my day to day errands. Now that I have it in my hands, I think it’s a really great size. It’s small like I had hoped for, but still roomy enough to comfortably hold my iPhone 6, my card holder, keys, and some makeup. The bag is super lightweight because it doesn’t have any hardware on it, and the leather is buttery and soft.
The interior is unlined, unlike the Greta bag on Shaffer LA’s website. Since this is an exclusive design for Box of Style, I can understand why. The retail value on this bag is also lower than the regular Greta bag. The crossbody strap has finished edges, even though the top of the bag is unfinished. I appreciate that detail, because nobody likes dealing with leather fibers on their clothes!
A few downsides to the bag: there’s no zipper or button to keep the bag closed, you just tie the cords to cinch it shut. The crossbody strap is not adjustable, so if you’re on the taller side or shorter side, this could be an issue. I personally didn’t have a real problem with either aspect of this bag. The bag is small enough that I won’t be carrying any items that could easily fall out. I tested it with some lipstick and lip balm (the smallest things I think I would carry) and tossed the bag around and nothing fell out. My boyfriend did think I had gone slightly crazy though, watching me wildly swing this bag around. In the end I’m happy to have this. The quality is definitely there and I foresee this bag becoming a staple of mine for casual days when I want to travel light.
LSTN Sound Co. Wembley Earbuds | $100.00
This is my third pair of LSTN earbuds. I also own their headphones, which I adore. I know a lot of people were displeased about getting more earbuds, since a lot of subscriptions have been sending our earbuds lately. But I have to say, LSTN has amazing sound quality and it’s for a great cause. In under 3 years, LSTN has provided hearing aids to over 20,000 people! I find it a little hard to complain about a product that is high quality, stylish, sustainably produced, and supports a good cause. (Sidenote: if you haven’t already, you should watch Youtube videos of people hearing for the first time. Children hearing their parents for the first time, parents hearing their children for the first time, people hearing music for the first time; it’s all pretty amazing. I totally cry every time I watch one.)
The earbuds come with three cushion sizes for your ears. I think this is really important, since it makes a huge difference in comfort. The smallest size works best for me, and the largest size works best for my boyfriend. I think I must have oddly shaped ears or small ears or something, because a lot of hard plastic earbuds hurt after a few minutes of use. With these, I never have a problem. There’s also a volume control and microphone on the cord, making it perfect for phone calls. I use LSTN headphones when I’m Skyping with my friends and it has made a world of difference in sound quality.
How gorgeous is this color combination? I’m really loving the bamboo wood! I also want to mention that LSTN has wonderful customer service. The first pair that I ever received from Quarterly stopped working after a few months of use, and when I wrote to their customer service about the problem, they sent me a brand new pair! They didn’t even care that I had received it through a subscription box, they stood behind their product 100%. Just thought I would share that tidbit, since I was thoroughly impressed.
Jouer Creme Eyeshadow Crayon | $24.00
Subscribers will receive 1 out of 8 possible colors, so it’s luck of the draw for this item. They’re all waterproof and paraben free, and people seem to give it good reviews online for staying power and ease of application.
I’m a little sad about getting this color, since it’s not something that I can pull off. I was really hoping for a more neutral shade. There were only three colors I didn’t want to receive and this is one of them. I would have preferred for Rachel to have picked out her favorite color and included it, so everyone would get the same color. I also think she would have chosen a very wearable color that worked for different skin tones, like a champagne or bronze. Oh well, into the gift pile it goes!
Jules Smith Pave Bar and Stone Cuff | $45.00
Love this delicate cuff! Subscribers will receive this cuff in either gold or silver, and I got the silver one. I’m okay with either metal finish, since I think gold looks better on me but I so rarely get anything silver from subscription boxes that this is a breath of fresh air. I think the turquoise also looks really amazing with the silver. Even though this is a delicate piece of jewelry, it feels well made and sturdy. I’m glad to have discovered this brand, she has tons of cute designs on the site!
I found the sizing to be just right. It wasn’t too snug but it felt secure on my wrist. I’m loving how it looks on! I’ve been wearing it all day today and already got a compliment from a stranger.
Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk | $20.00
Like every subscription box junkie, I have tons of dry shampoo. This isn’t a terribly exciting product to receive, but at least it’s a quality product. Klorane is a tried and true dry shampoo and one of my favorites. Allure Magazine has voted it “Best Dry Shampoo”, so you know it’s a beloved beauty staple.
Hollywood Fashion Secrets Oil Blotting Tissues | $5.00
Each box thus far has contained some sort of styling tool, so a very practical item like this is expected. Living in Houston, I can tell you with absolute certainty that these will get used. I didn’t know of this brand before, but it’s a good deal! For $5 you get 100 sheets, and the sheets are made in Japan. I’ve been paying a lot more for a similar product, and I’m sure this one will be just as effective.
This box also came with an extra “spotlight product”.
La Mer The Concentrate | $44.00
The sample is super tiny (quarter shown for scale!), but since La Mer is ridiculously pricey, this sample size is valued at $44. Crazy, right? One of my friends swears by La Mer and she has a tip for stretching this tiny bottle for as long as you can. She applies a very thin layer of face moisturizer to her fingertip before applying this serum, so her fingers won’t absorb any of the serum. I don’t know if I even want to love this, because the last thing I need right now is to fall in love with a $440 bottle of La Mer!
I really liked this box and appreciate the functionality of it. The total value comes out to $344.00 without the La Mer extra, and $388.00 with the La Mer. The two highest value items are both very useful and will probably become part of my regular routine. The bracelet is gorgeous and I’m very excited to wear it with my outfits. Even the dry shampoo and blotting papers are good essentials to have around. The only thing I won’t use is the eyeshadow, but I’ll be able to gift it to a friend who is more adventurous with her makeup.
I always feels like it’s a great value and I get my money’s worth with this subscription. The curation always feels thoughtful and I understand why each item is in the box. This box did a good job of representing spring to me: earbuds for working out, a lightweight bag perfect for festivals, eyeshadow stick for on-the-go beauty, dry shampoo for new hairstyles, blotting papers for the warmer weather, and a delicate bracelet to pair with your spring wardrobe. But enough about my opinions, I’d love to hear what you thought about this box!
