FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

It feels like it’s been forever since my last FabFitFun VIP box! Or maybe it just feels like that because summer in Houston goes on forever and ever. So ready for sweater weather and pumpkin spice everything!

FabFitFun is a quarterly subscription box that sends out beauty, wellness, fashion, and fitness products for $49.99 a box. If you choose to purchase a whole year (4 boxes), the price goes down to $44.99 a box. They promise at least a $200 value in each box, though they sometimes exceed that by quite a bit. If you’re looking for a box that delivers an amazingly great value each time, this is the one!

If you like what you see, the Fall box is still currently available for purchase. Get $10 off (bringing the price down to only $39.99) by using this link. For $39.99, that’s a total steal! That makes it the same price as POPSUGAR Must Have, except the value here is somehow almost double your average POPSUGAR box!

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Completely adore the fun box design they shipped out! It’s covered in fall-themed illustrations ready to be colored in. I wish more subscription companies sent interactive boxes like this!

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Every time I get a FFF box I look forward to the little booklet that comes with it. I always read it all the way through and find little bits of interesting information. Like this time I learned about a bunch of great companies (with products featured in this box!) that were founded by women. Love it! It included a cute little interview with each founder which was informative and fun to read.

Modcloth Loch and Key Scarf | $34.99
Subscribers received one out of four color options: green/blue, red/tan, black/white, and black/tan. The green and blue option was my second choice (after red and tan) so I’m pretty pleased. If you are an annual subscriber, you were allowed to choose your color. Anyways, I love that we got a Modcloth item in the box! I am a huge fan of Modcloth and have been shopping there for years. They have the cutest stuff!

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

It’s hard to depict in a photograph how soft this scarf is, but I hope this picture of the texture helps a little. It is seriously so incredibly soft! And it’s also a huge scarf. It could absolutely work as a small throw. I can’t wait to wear this on my next flight. I always get cold on planes and in airports so a big soft scarf is my absolute must have.

The Created Co. To-Go Coffee Mug | $19.00
Digging the hand lettering on this travel mug! Subscribers either received this design or one that says “Joy Comes In The Morning”. I preferred this one, so very glad I received it. I’ve had such great luck with getting my preferred options with FabFitFun boxes so far. This travel mug is a good size–a full 16 ounces. My little KeepCup that I use daily for coffee is only 12 ounces, so this is a better option for drinks that I drink more of, like teas and lattes.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

The BrowGal Eyebrow Gel | $20.00
My current holy grail for eyebrows is Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Gel, but I’ve been running low and am interested in trying something new. It looks like this gets good reviews, so I have high hopes. I have only tried it on once since I got my box on Monday so I can’t really testify about how effective or long lasting it is. What I can say is that it was easy to work with and dried quickly, and I didn’t notice any flaking (though I only had it on for about 5 hours). No noticeable smell either, which is always a must for products in the eye area for me.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Skin Laundry Restoring Night Serum | $50.00
I was so excited to see this in my box! I’ve seen this brand at Anthropologie and have considered buying it on numerous occasions, but didn’t want to bite the bullet without reading reviews. I haven’t found that many reliable reviews for this particular serum, but I’m hoping it will be good for travel. They recommend using this on flights to arrive feeling refreshed and hydrated. I’ll be trying it on my next flight! In the meantime, I’ll add it to my night time routine. I’m a little disappointed that this appears to be inferior packaging just for this box, because the printing is already rubbing off. I wish they had just sent the actual product in the regular packaging.

Toesox Toeless Fitness Socks | $15.00
Woohoo, a fitness item that I know I will definitely use! Lots of women in my yoga/pilates class wear grippy socks and I tried my first pair last year. Since then, I’ve been meaning to buy a few more pairs and wanted to try the toeless option as well. My favorite thing about subscription boxes is getting to try items that I was going to buy already, but at a fraction of the cost! These socks came in a variety of colors, but I’m completely ambivalent about fitness socks so I am happy with any color.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Very grippy soles of the socks! These are machine washable, but you do have to turn them inside out. Fits size 5-10. I am a size 7 and they were perfect for me. The little FabFitFun magazine suggests wearing these during pedicures in the cold weather to keep your feet warm. Love that idea! It’s definitely not cold enough here to warrant socks yet, but maybe in the winter I’ll try it.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Mullein & Sparrow Mini French Lavender Body Oil | $18.00
If you love lavender, you need this body oil. The fragrance is so strong I could smell it as soon as I opened my box! A little goes a long way, so even though this is the mini bottle I anticipate it lasting a long time. I dislike my body oils to be this heavily perfumed, but I love the idea of using this for aromatherapy. The magazine recommends adding a few drops to your bath. The simple ingredients list really appeals to me: it’s just organic sunflower oil, organic lavender essential oil, and tocopherol (vitamin e).

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

FabFitFun Coloring Book & Colored Pencils | $14.00
There were two different coloring book options for this fall box: nature and things. I am overjoyed that I received the nature book! It’s filled with plenty of illustrations of flowers and foliage that I can’t wait to fill in. Unfortunately the colored pencils are horrible, but I already have a set that I like to use.

Such pretty illustrations!

Pure Cosmetics Nude Collection Eyeshadow Palette | $50.00
When I first saw the spoilers for this palette I wasn’t that excited, since I already own all 3 of the Urban Decay Naked palettes. But now that October is right around the corner, I’m thinking it’s time to start hoarding for Christmas gifts! My boyfriend’s cousin is just starting to experiment with makeup and I’m sure she would love this. The packaging is lovely and is perfect for gifting.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

What I dislike about this palette is how overpriced I think it is. This is almost an exact duplicate of the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, which is only $4 more. (And completely amazing, by the way. I would highly recommend it!) If I hadn’t received this palette in a box, I would never purchase it. The original Urban Decay one is a much better deal because you know you’re getting phenomenal quality!

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Spongelle Bulgarian Rose Body Wash Infused Buffer | $16.00
This is my third Spongelle and I love them! They are the perfect solution for travel. The sponge/buffer is infused with body wash and can be used at least 14 times. If you hate traveling with little bottles of body wash that leak and spill, consider trying these. I am happy to see they made this scent an exclusive for FabFitFun subscribers, but also wish they would sell it in their regular lineup–I love the scent! I love all rose scents and this one is sweet and romantic without being cloying.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Cottonelle Fresh Care Flushable Cleansing Cloths | $2.99
This is a sponsored item, meaning it doesn’t count towards the value of the box. It seems that FabFitFun has stopped doing gift cards and are leaning more towards these sponsored items. Even though Cottonelle wipes aren’t terribly exciting, they’re useful and good to have around the house.

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Secret Outlast Xtend Clear Gel | $2.99
Another sponsored item, though it’s just a sample. I remember using Secret deodorant in middle school, so this totally takes me back. I used to pick based on how pretty the label was and how appealing the scents sounded, haha. But after a year or so I switched brands because I disliked how sticky the gel formula felt. Good news: they’ve changed! Big time! This dries very quickly and stays dry. No more sticky damp feeling and holding your arms up waiting for the gel to dry!

FabFitFun Fall 2016 Subscription Review plus $10 Off!

Wow, what a box! The total value is $239.99! Every time I get one of these boxes I ask myself “how do they do it??”. The value is so amazing and the curation is superb. This truly felt like a fall box, and it makes me excited for the upcoming cool weather. (Though to be honest, I was already so excited with or without a box.) I got lots of items that I am already using, and also was able to get a lot of gifts out of this box. I’m considering buying a second box for more gifts!

Again, if you want the Fall box it’s still available! Get $10 off (bringing the price down to only $39.99) by using this link. Seriously, only $39.99 for all these goodies! Treat yo’self!

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Got my September box from Peaches and Petals a few days ago. I was really dying to get the items in my hands and try them out, because last month was such a disappointment. I’m pleased to say that this month was a slam dunk for me!

Peaches and Petals is a monthly subscription service that sends out vintage-modern items and beauty goods. For $19.99 a month (includes shipping), you’ll receive a mix of jewelry, fashion accessories, lifestyle goods, and beauty samples.

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

The theme for September is “Cuteness Overload”. Kind of an amazing theme, right?

Cat Coin Purse | $1.75
This made me laugh out loud when I saw it. It’s so cute and funny! My parents have a gray tabby who is always grumpy and this reminds me of her so much. My favorite part about this coin purse it that the back of it is furry!

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Even the interior lining is adorable! Loving the little flower illustrations. I’m going to keep this in my car to stash all my quarters for parking meters. It’s the perfect size–small enough to easily tuck in my glove box and large enough to hold lots of coins and receipts.

Blue Avocado Eco Wrap | $12.94
Really impressed to see a Blue Avocado product in my box! It’s a brand that I discovered through POPSUGAR and I love their prints. The quality of their products is great, because I’ve been using the same tote bag for over 2 years now and it’s going strong. This is listed on the information card as a “cute surprise”, meaning not every subscriber received it. I think subscribers either received this or a bird necklace. Personally I’m happier with this sandwich wrap because it will get more use in my household than a necklace!

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Sturdy materials and good quality stitching. I can tell this is going to last for a long time. The interior is a waterproof material that wipes clean easily. We go through a lot of zip lock sandwich bags right now and I’m happy to have a more green alternative for me to use. I tried it out yesterday and it worked really well. The sandwich didn’t get dried out and it was really easy to clean the wrapping. Bonus: the nautical print is adorable!

Mermaid Knee High Socks | $15.00
Love this! It seems like mermaids are really having a moment right now, because I’ve been seeing a ton of mermaid related items in stores for the past year or so. These knee socks are one size fits all, though I would say they’re on the smaller side. My shoe size is 7 and I tend to wear size 4 pants and these were a good fit for me. Not too loose and not too tight. I imagine it’s a pretty small range though, since the material isn’t as stretchy as other socks I’ve had in the past. The pattern would get distorted if they were overly stretched too. But since they fit me, I’m happy with getting them in my box. They’re fun and silly!

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Totes Adorbs Tote Bag | $2.00 (?)
Simple but cute! Really fits the theme well. This is a very basic tote bag with no bells or whistles. Not particularly well made, but sturdy enough for your groceries as long as you don’t overload the bag. I tend to use Baggu bags for groceries, but this would be useful to keep around as a spare.

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

I particularly like the metallic gold silk screen printing!

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Unicorn Pillow Cover | $15.00 (?)
Favorite item from this box! I love getting pillow covers in boxes because it’s a really easy way to change up your decor for different holidays, events, and seasons! Peaches and Petals seems to send out pillow covers fairly often. I think we got one in the February box as well. I love the print on this one! It’s so cute and just perfect for a girls night. My friends and I like to do an impromptu movie spa night (sheet masks + chick flicks!) once a month and I can’t wait to show off this pillow cover! Fits a standard square pillow.

Peaches and Petals September 2016 Review

Wow! What a change from last month! I really liked all the items for this month and thought they were well curated for the theme. Everything also felt very on-trend right now, not outdated or anything. I could totally picture these items in stores right now. The value comes to an estimated $46.69, which is over twice the cost of the box itself. But more importantly, nothing felt like filler material. Each item was clearly chosen with intention and I thought it made for a very cohesive box. Hopefully this is the type of box we will continue to see from Peaches and Petals! Can’t wait to see what my birthday month box will contain!

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

It feels good to be back from my blog hiatus! Extra exciting because fall is right around the corner and fall always has the best boxes. Here in Houston the heat isn’t letting up at all, but I’m hoping once October gets here it will finally start to become sweater and boots weather again!

POPSUGAR Must Have is a subscription service that sends a variety of items for women that are curated by the POPSUGAR editors. Items typically include food, beauty, home, among other miscellaneous things. Each month is $39.99/month, but you can use the code REFER5 to get $5 off your first month.

Jack & Lucy Bicoastal Wide Brim Hat | $58.00
This was the spoiler item that POPSUGAR released ahead of time, so I knew what to expect. Not going to lie, I was skeptical when I saw the spoiler picture! I’ve never had good luck with fashion hats–I tend to look really silly in them. I only own warm winter hats (leftovers from my days on the East Coast, certainly not necessary in Houston!) and a few straw hats that I wear exclusively at the beach.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

But I’m happy to announce that I like this hat! I think it looks decent on me, and my boyfriend thinks it’s really cute. I wear it more towards the back of my head and pair it with oversized sunglasses. A great look for fall! The material is 100% wool and the black color is classic.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

The interior of the hat is adjustable with a ribbon, so it fits a large range of sizes. The default size was a bit large for me, but by tying the ribbon I was able to get a perfect fit. The only downside to this hat? The wool material makes it a magnet for lint and dog hair! Both of which my house seems to have plenty of. And the black color makes it really obvious. Good thing POPSUGAR also included a remedy to this problem! (Keep reading!)

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask | $36.00
Whew, this is a huge tub! I’ve tried this product before thanks to Birchbox, and it didn’t do much for my hair. For the record, I have thick hair that frizzes really easily. This mask weighed it down a lot and didn’t make it feel smoother or repaired. It does get great reviews though and I have friends who swear by this stuff, so it will get gifted. Can’t complain about this since I like that they’re sending out new brands (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Briogeo product in POPSUGAR before) and it’s a very generous size.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

NCLA Mani-ER Tool Kit | $16.00
Pleased to see something I haven’t gotten from a subscription box before! I like how small and compact this kit is, and the concept is great. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been traveling and broken a nail and wished I had a little repair kit! My last one got confiscated by TSA and I never bothered replacing it, so this is a welcome surprise. Word of advice: don’t bring this in your carry-on luggage! There’s a chance that TSA will consider the scissors to be dangerous. Completely silly, I know. But hey it could happen!

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

Unfortunately, the quality of the individual tools is quite low. I’m disappointed because the brand NCLA has had great products in the past, and for $16 I think it should be higher quality. My last kit was from Target and only cost like $8, and I would say the quality was about the same.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

Flint Lint Roller | $9.99
Is it weird that my favorite item this month is a lint roller? This is a retractable lint roller that you can use on the go. Since it retracts into a solid case, you don’t run the risk of having it stick on anything. My dog is constantly getting little brown hairs all over me, and I love to wear black. Due to that combination, I’ve gotten used to keeping lint rollers in my car, at my office, and all around the house. Now I can have one for my purse and for travel! This is also perfect because the black wool hat from this box definitely needs a lint roller every now and then.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

Smith & Cult Lip Lacquer in The Warning | $22.00
I really like Smith & Cult and was excited to get one of their lip products. I’ve tried their nail polish before and it’s wonderful, so I had high hopes! Overall the formula is good, but one thing that I dislike is the packaging. It looks totally luxe and beautiful, except there’s this annoying dented part on the cap! Doesn’t it look like it’s unintentional?! It drives me nuts–to me it looks like the lip gloss got really banged up in my purse or something. At first I actually thought my lip gloss was damaged, but on their website the dent seems to be their “signature” for packaging.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

The color is a really bright red, but goes on pretty sheer. It’s a little stickier than I would like, but the color is lovely and stays well. I’ll add it to my already massive collection of lip gloss, though I won’t be repurchasing. Between the weird packaging and the stickiness I’m left a little disappointed.

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

The Gluten Free Bites Dark Chocolate Coconut Bites | $4.99
It’s always nice to see subscription companies catering to different dietary needs. I know plenty of people who are on gluten free/vegan/dairy free diets now, and I like having snacks on hand that I can share! I also like that this isn’t a super healthy snack like granola. More chocolate please, POPSUGAR! To me (a person with no dietary restrictions) these tasted kind of odd because of the texture, but my friend who has been eating dairy free for a year now thinks they are fabulous. She has been missing chocolate and these were a great fix for her. I’m happy that I was able to share something from my box!

POPSUGAR Must Have September 2016 Box Review

The September box was a mixed bag for me. The total value of this box is $146.98, which is fantastic. I do like the hat and the lint roller, which more than covers the cost of the subscription. The hair mask and the chocolate ended up being shared/gifted. The lip gloss and the nail kit were sort of disappointing. Overall I’m still pleased, because I understand that not every month will have 6 items that I love. As long as I like enough items that cover the cost of the subscription, I consider it a win. Super excited about October though, it’s my birthday month and I’ve had a great track record of phenomenal boxes!

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

Back from a little unplanned blogging break! I sort of hit a mental roadblock last month when I got the controversial Peaches and Petal box, and I didn’t really know how to review it in the most fair and honest way. After thinking about it for a long time, here’s the review! Thank you to all my readers for your support! Y’all are the best 🙂

Peaches and Petals is a monthly subscription service that sends out vintage-modern items and beauty goods. For $19.99 a month (includes shipping), you’ll receive a mix of jewelry, fashion accessories, lifestyle goods, and beauty samples.

The theme for August was “Thank You For Being A Friend”. It included a cute little inspirational sticker, which I put on a plain notebook. The pink watercolor background is pretty and very on-trend right now!

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

Golden Girls Notecards Pack of 5 | $2.00 (?)
I usually adore stationery in boxes and would love to get a set of thank you cards. I go through thank you cards really quickly and am always looking for new cute designs. Unfortunately, I don’t really care for Golden Girls and don’t have any friends who are fans either. The print quality is also pretty low.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

Funkytech Kitty Kat Two-Port Splitter | $7.25
I would have loved this a few years ago, but my boyfriend and I are upgrading to the new iPhone 7 soon, which doesn’t have a port for headphones. But on the bright side I’m going on a long international flight with my mom next year, so I might be able to put this to use during the flight! She also really likes cats so I’ll probably just give it to her. Some subscribers received the splitter in a fox shape, which was also super cute.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

Manna Kadar Split Pan Bronzer and Highlighter and Duo | $21.00
As you can see, this item arrived completely smashed. I don’t fault Peaches and Petals, because Birchbox recently sent the exact same item out and most of them arrived damaged as well. I think there was also another box that sent them out last month with the same problem. It’s clearly a manufacturing problem. Unfortunately due to the mixing of the bronzer and highlighter, the broken powder can’t actually be used for either. It’s too pale and sparkly as a bronzer but definitely not a highlighter. I think the best bet would be as an eyeshadow.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

Friendship Surprise (Picture Frame) | $14.99
I don’t get very many picture frames in subscription boxes, so I appreciate a more unique item. The style isn’t really for me, but I’m sure I can find a friend who would like it. Since the frame is made of wood, it’s also an easy DIY to paint over the current design and do something else with it. Some subscribers received a trinket box instead of the picture frame.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

The frame is a pretty big size. Here it is with the cards and the bronzer/highlighter for size reference. It fits a 4×6 photo.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

And here’s the controversial item that I really struggled with:

2

Anchor Necklace | $1.02
The anchor necklace that they sent out came on these “Friendship” cards. Once I saw it, I instantly knew it was a counterfeit Dogeared product. The one I received from Peaches and Petals is on the left, and on the right is the authentic product from the Dogeared website. I’ve removed the logos on the packaging I received at the request of Peaches and Petals.

1

Notice how the text is in Comic Sans? Yikes.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

The corners are also sloppily cut, probably by someone at home with a simple paper cutter and scissors.

Peaches and Petals August 2016 Review

I emailed customer service about the issue and was eventually given the following response:

“The anchor necklace that was sent out was sent to us in incorrect packaging and it was NOT what we had been shown or ordered. The item we specifically purchased had no mention of a brand. Unfortunately, our first round of boxes were shipped with the incorrect packaging as our shipping team did not catch the error. The necklaces included in our August box are in no way branded or associated to the brand, and as so we did not mention any branding on our item list postcard. Also, please note that the retail value of the item is no more than $9.99.”

I was still hesitant about what to post in my review, since I wanted to address my issues with the box without putting all the blame on Peaches and Petals (because I do genuinely believe they are not 100% at fault here). I was able to receive a little more insight about the process, shown in the email I received:

“We’re fine with you being honest, but we do ask that the brand not be shown in the review. This is because we never once stated subscribers would get a branded item, nor mentioned it on the post card. The product we purchased had pictures that did not have any brand on it what so ever. It was just the plain phrase with the necklace, which is also sold on ebay and many other sites at this time.

When our shipment arrived our warehouse counted the amount, and we began preparing boxes. It’s 100% our fault for not looking at the product we received, as we would have stopped them from shipping with the logo. The majority of the first round of boxes left the warehouse (which included our bloggers) with the incorrect packaging, and the rest were fixed. We advised all bloggers to not over value the product (many had put the high retail value of the branded item), and that the item was worth no more than $9.99.

Many other bloggers have said the packaging on many of the first round boxes was incorrect and showed branding, and that we did state to them that we are NOT claiming this to be name brand nor does it have the value.”

My main problem is this: While I understand that Peaches and Petals did not advertise this as a Dogeared product, they still ended up sending it out. And as such, they should be taking full responsibility for it and reaching out to customers. Not all subscribers who received the first wave of boxes were contacted about this problem. I know that for sure, because I have friends who were not aware of the problem until others started posting about it. I’m sure there are others who don’t even know they got a counterfeit item!

But I’m also sympathetic to Peaches and Petals if they really did not know they were buying a knock-off product. Sourcing is a difficult job, and it is very possible that the extra packaging was just overlooked at the warehouse.

I’ve been a loyal Dogeared customer for many years now and I was horrified to see this. They’re a company that makes high quality handmade jewelry in the USA, and started from very humble beginnings. It’s sickening that people out there are ripping off their designs and giving their brand a bad name by putting out bad quality counterfeit products. Sourcing is hard and labor intensive, but it’s a job that should not be taken lightly. Whomever is in charge of sourcing at Peaches and Petals really needs to do more research and be more diligent at his or her job. Purchasing counterfeit products is incredibly harmful (it can literally end up funding terrorism!) and should be taken extremely seriously.

Verdict: I’m sorely disappointed with this box. For $19.99, the value is only $46.26 with almost half the value coming from a broken product. I also found the age demographic of this box to be strange. I was always under the impression that I (working professional in my mid-20’s) was in their target demographic. But this box felt like it was for an older audience due to the Golden Girls cards and the outdated headphone splitter. This is without a doubt my least favorite box so far. Even without the necklace problem, I would have been unhappy with this box.

Oh and one last thing: if you like the look of dainty charm necklaces, I would highly recommend checking out Dogeared! They make beautiful pieces and their customer service is top notch. I promise you that the authentic pieces are wonderful quality and will last you much longer than the cheap imitations.
