Emma & Chloe Jewelry Box May 2017 Review

Wow, this review is late–even by my procrastinating standards! I genuinely thought this box was the June shipment (since I received it earlier this month) so I was holding off on posting this review until mid-month. But imagine my horror when I saw a shipping notice in my email that said my June box was on the way! I went to look at my last review and lo and behold, it was for April. So….yeah. Sorry about that everyone!

Emma & Chloe Jewelry Box is a monthly jewelry club that represents independent, up-and-coming French jewelry designers. In addition to their monthly shipments, you can also purchase jewelry from their online boutique.

Every month they feature a designer and send a surprise piece of jewelry, though you can choose if you prefer gold or silver and whether or not you have pierced ears. If you do the month to month plan, it’s $35/month. If you prepay, the price goes down to $33/month for a 3 month subscription, $31/month for a 6 month subscription, and $29/month for a 12 month subscription. The unique piece of jewelry is always valued between $50 and $200, so you’re getting a significant discount no matter what option you choose.

Emma & Chloe Jewelry Box May 2017 Review

I always mention this in every review for Emma & Chloe: the packaging is lovely! This black box comes in a padded bubble mailer, so the box is always in pristine condition. And the box is really sturdy and super cute! The interior pattern is adorable and I love to reuse these boxes for storage or for wrapping gifts.

Each month comes with a little mini magazine and also a postcard. I love the beautifully shot photos and thoughtful content. There’s always an interview with the featured designer plus lots of other little articles that are fun to read.

If you’re a lover of France (and seriously, who isn’t?) you will really enjoy the articles! There’s always at least one article that makes me ready to jet off to Paris. Luckily this month it’s all about Parisian picnics and how you can create your own without having to fly across the pond. I love all the suggestions! This magazine is packed with styling tips, new trends, and even has a fun quiz at the end every month.

4 Crosses Elsa Earrings | $69.00
The featured piece this month is a beautiful dainty set of earrings from 4 Crosses. Since my preference is gold, I received these in gold but it also came in silver. I love that Emma and Chloe was able to accommodate those who do not have pierced ears! Subscribers who do not have pierced ears were able to get this exact pair as clip ons! I love that, since most subscription companies will just send out an alternative piece like a necklace or bracelet.

Every month comes with a certificate of authenticity and simple care instructions.

A close up of the earrings! I am a big fan of dainty jewelry in general, and long earrings are my jam! They make my neck look really long and they’re statement pieces without being too heavy or large. The warm coral color of the bead is also perfect for my skin tone–coral is my favorite shade for lips and cheeks!

Okay, now here’s the cool part: you can transform these earrings by folding the earring in half so the bead is at the bottom. The post goes through one of the gold links in the chain and suddenly you have earrings that are half the length and more full. I love it! So much fun and versatile.

These earrings look so beautiful when they move! The little gold leaf shapes reflect light and create a lovely draped effect. I always get compliments on my Emma and Chloe pieces, and this was no exception. I wore it to a fancy dinner last week and several people commented on how delicate and pretty my earrings were!

I’m very happy with the jewelry from this month! Although I haven’t had a month that I dislike yet. For the record, this is my 4th month. I think if you’re someone like me who adores dainty jewelry and loves all things French, this is perfect for you. The value is great, the quality of the pieces is awesome, the packaging is beautiful, and you get to discover new designers!

I look at my jewelry collection now and think the curation from Emma and Chloe is so on point. The pieces all look cohesive together and they send you a little of everything. So far I’ve received a ring, a necklace, a bracelet, and now earrings. It’s really smart that they alternate so much! I can’t wait to see what next month will bring, and hopefully I will be better at keeping track of what boxes are meant for which month in the future!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Happy first day of October, everyone! It’s finally feeling like Fall down here and I couldn’t be happier. Bring on the pumpkin spice and cozy sweaters! Kicking off October is a review for a new-to-me subscription that I know has been around for a while: Cate & Chloe VIP. I’ve read good things on Liz’s website but have never had a chance to try them for myself, so I was thrilled with the opportunity to do so. Cate & Chloe kindly sent me their October box for review, and I really feel like I lucked out with the month!

Cate & Chloe VIP is a jewelry subscription service that sends out 2 pieces of jewelry each month, tailored to your preferences. They have a whole range of jewelry styles and various metals, so you can let them know if you prefer silver over gold, or if you don’t have pierced ears, and they will work around that. The month to month subscription price is $39.99, and the price goes down if you commit to a longer subscription. And guess what? If you sign up for October’s box, they’re making it extra special: 15% of the VIP sales will be donated to American Cancer Society to help fight breast cancer. Love that they support such a wonderful cause!

First look. It’s all packaged really well with tissue paper, so I can see this being a good box to gift. All the jewelry also comes in individual little boxes so it’s very easy for gifting.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Each month they include some styling tips, and explain what the “perk of the month” is. In the past I’ve seen nail polish, shampoo, and other smaller things, so you can usually expect something of that sort. I’ve also seen really stunning bonus jewelry items too, so I guess some months you get extra lucky!

Each item comes in one of these boxes. It’s sturdy and cute enough to be gifted without any additional wrapping. I’m already thinking of Christmas and how cute these would be in stockings!

Rachel “Beautiful” Rose Gold Bracelet | $125.00
Whoa, check out that price tag. While it’s a beautiful piece and well made for costume jewelry, I think the value is inflated. The style is simple but classic, and can be worn with all types of outfits. I think this is a piece that can easily be dressed up or down. It’s really versatile and I don’t have anything else like this in my current collection, so I’m very happy.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

The rose gold is absolutely gorgeous and I love the fit of this bracelet. It’s roomy without being as big as a bangle, and I can use my laptop just fine with it on. Usually my biggest issue with bangles is how much noise it makes when it I’m typing. Anyways, this bracelet is so pretty I’ve been wearing it all the time and have gotten compliments on it already!

Brooklyn “Sublime” Leaf Stud Earrings | $59.00
I mentioned really loving stud earrings, so I was delighted to find this pair in my box. The quality is great for costume jewelry (seems to be a trend with Cate & Chloe pieces!) and I foresee it becoming a go-to in my collection.

Cute, right? They’re small enough for an every day look but are more exciting than your typical studs.

Cate & Chloe Makeup Brush Set | $25.00 (?)
This is a bonus item for October and all new subscribers for this month will get this in their first box. I’m loving the travel case that rolls up and ties with the hot pink ribbon. It’s pretty and totally functional, and is an elegant solution for travel.

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

I can already picture myself bringing this with me when I travel, or just keeping it around as a back up set of brushes. The quality is decent and I’m impressed by the range of tools! I was imagining just 2 or 3 brushes, not 6!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

The perk of the month is this pink “Fight Like A Girl” wristband to show support for breast cancer. Since 15% of the sales from this month are going to support cancer research, I think it’s a very fitting bonus item. I’ll be rocking it for an upcoming run my company is doing for breast cancer!

Cate & Chloe VIP October Subscription Box Review plus 15% Off

Overall verdict: I think it’s a really good value for high quality pieces. I’m calculating a $209.00 value, assuming the brush set is around $25.00. Even though I don’t think that’s a fair assessment of the value since the prices do seem inflated to me, I think it’s definitely worth more than the subscription price. Their designs look fantastic and seem to have a classic timeless style to them, which I love. And you can really narrow down what you will receive by setting your preferences. Additional bonus: their customer service is top notch!

If you’re looking for a jewelry subscription that values quality over quantity, this is a great choice. I think it’s an especially good choice if you aren’t too crazy with your jewelry preferences (huge statement necklaces, super bright colors, etc.) and want to try something new without getting something you can’t wear.

Interested in signing up for this? Use code SECRETLYHOARDING15 for 15% off your subscription. Expires 11/30. And don’t forget: October is a great month to try it since you’ll get the makeup brushes and you will be supporting cancer research! Win win.

Gem La La Fall 2015 Subscription Box Review plus Promo Code

Whew, September is officially here and we’re actually experiencing a very slight decline in temperature here in Houston! I practically have my boots ready and lined up at the door in anticipation for Fall and cooler days. Anyways, today I’m reviewing a new-to-me jewelry subscription service that was kind enough to send me their Fall box (it’s like they knew how excited I am for the change in season!) for review.

Gem La La is a jewelry subscription service that ships on a quarterly schedule. Each shipment contains 5-6 pieces of jewelry and accessories plus a reusable tote bag, totaling a $200 value. Gem La La has a sister site: t+j Designs, and all of the pieces in each box are either available on the t+j site or very similar in style and quality. The cost of a single shipment is $42.99, and the price goes down if you commit to a longer subscription (2 for $76.99, 3 for $102.99, and a whole year for $119.99).

Gem La La Fall 2015 Subscription Box Review plus Promo Code

First look! All the items come individually wrapped in clear plastic bags, and the tote bag is folded up and tucked at the bottom. If you’re planning to gift any of the jewelry pieces, this is convenient since each item is already pre-packaged separately. The information card didn’t include any of the items, but you can find most of them and other similar pieces on the t+j website.

Bejeweled Necklace | $52.00 (??)
The first item I pulled out of the box is this necklace. Initially I wasn’t sure if I could pull it off, but I tried it on and it looks surprisingly good! Usually I’m all about dainty minimal jewelry, so it’s nice to get some more statement pieces in my collection. Now I just need to find an excuse to wear it! I couldn’t find this exact piece on the t+j site, but similar necklaces are around this price point.

Close up shot. I think the colors are just perfect for Fall! I actually like this piece the more I look at it. It’s definitely something that can be dressed up or down.

Gold Chain Faux Leather Black Bracelet | $26.00 (on sale for $10.00)
I never know if I should calculate the value of a sale item based on the new sale price or the original price. This bracelet is 8.5″ long and has a double snap closure. It’s much edgier than my comfort zone, but I saw some pictures of how to style similar bracelets and think I can pull it off! I have a ton of black in my wardrobe and lots of black leather bags, so I’m pretty confident that I can pull a cute Fall outfit together to incorporate this bracelet into.

Out of all the color options available for this piece, I’m glad I received black. The leather band is much more comfortable than a bangle or traditional bracelet.

Pave Flat Link Gold Bracelet | $48.00 (on sale for $16.00)
This bracelet is super glam and super flashy, and it looks really pretty on my wrist. The piece feels kind of heavy but the foldover clasp is sturdy enough to keep it very secure. It fit my wrist perfectly at 7″ long, but I don’t have particularly large wrists or anything, so I imagine it could be a snug fit for some people.

I can totally see myself wearing this for a night out! I love how sparkly and bold it is.

Gold Star Studs | $18.00
Again, I couldn’t find this exact pair of studs on the website but a similar pair of gold cross studs is on sale for $10.00. This is probably the piece of jewelry that is most similar to my current style. I can never have too many small stud earrings, so this was a good staple to add to my stud collection.

Triple Pearl Crystal Bar Earrings | $34.00
Very pretty! I have a few weddings coming up in the next few months that I can wear these to. The size is about the same as the diameter of a nickel, which is just right for me. Pearls and sparkles are such a timeless combination, I’m sure I’ll find a ton of uses for these earrings!

Gem La La Fall 2015 Subscription Box Review plus Promo Code

And of course, the tote bag. I laughed when I read this; I love it!

Gem La La Fall 2015 Subscription Box Review plus Promo Code

Overall, I think it was a really nice box with a good curation for Fall weather. However, I think it kind of puts people off when they receive a subscription item that is simultaneously on sale on the regular website, since it feels like the company is using the subscription as a way of getting rid of unwanted stock. It’s probably better to stagger the sales so none of the items coincide with what is currently on clearance. Just my two cents!

The non-sale value for the box comes to $178.00, and accounting for the two items that are currently on sale, the value comes to $130.00. Both numbers fall short of the promised $200, so perhaps Gem La La should consider lowering their promised value. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting $178 or $130 worth of stuff for $42.99, it’s actually a really good deal! But I think when you promise a certain value and under deliver, customers get a bit upset.

So bottom line: if you’re looking for new styles to add to your collection and you like the current pieces on t+j, I think this is a great subscription with good value. You can get lots of fun items for a fraction of retail price. But if you’re looking for that amazing advertised $200 value, are picky about what you will receive, or only stick to a few specific styles of jewelry, this probably isn’t your cup of tea.

If you’re interested in getting this Fall box or a future shipment, you can use promo code SECRETLYH to get a free mint bracelet in your first tote!

What did you think about this box? I’d love to hear your comments!

EDIT 09/07/2015: Gem La La reached out to me with some new information. The first necklace in my post has a value of $68.00, and the tote bag is valued at $20.00. I think one jewelry item was missing from my box: the “Druzy Stone Chain Bracelet”, valued at $48.00. Taking all that into consideration, the new value for the entire box is $214.00.

You can purchase the exact same items that I received (with the missing bracelet included) here for $57.99. You can also use the SECRETLYH code to get the mint bracelet added on!

I ADORN U Mystery Box from JewelMint

I got my first mystery box from JewelMint, and I have to say I’m pretty pleased. This was the first time JewelMint offered a designer specific mystery box, and I really hope they do more in the future. I usually don’t like JewelMint mystery boxes because there are so many styles and I don’t love them all, but when it’s narrowed down to a specific designer I feel much more inclined to take a little risk. JewelMint offered two different boxes, one featuring designer I ADORN U and another one featuring Olive Yew. I ordered both, but the Olive Yew one hasn’t been delivered yet. Stay tuned for that review in a few days!

This mystery box is $39.99 and comes with 3 pieces. Each box comes ready for holiday gifting, which was a really cute touch. It was another reason I felt comfortable buying this box. If I don’t love the pieces, I’m sure one of my friends will! Oh, and this box is still available! I’m not sure for how much longer, probably until they sell out, so if you’re interested definitely grab one soon. The Olive Yew box is already sold out.

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery BoxBaby Blue Bracelet with Pyrite | $12.00
Not something I would pick out for myself, but I think it could be cute with some of my outfits. I have a lot of similar blues in my wardrobe, so the color was spot on! I know there is also a bright pink version, and I’m so glad I got this one instead.

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery Box BraceletThe pyrite is a great touch! It adds a little bit of edge, but is still subtle and sophisticated. I hate it when designers use cheap rhinestones to add a bit of bling to jewelry! I’m definitely more into natural stones and minerals like this.

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery Box BraceletLittle Gold Arrow Earrings | $18.00
Love! They’re small and cute and great for casual days. I love how light they are as well. I think I’ll get a lot of uses out of these!

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery Box Arrow EarringsLittle Elephant Necklace | $25.00 (?)
I’ve been looking for this necklace everywhere to try and get a price, but didn’t find anything. I’m estimating it to be around $25 based on similar items that I ADORN U sells. This also isn’t a piece I would pick out for myself, but it’s very dainty and cute. I’m also liking the fact that the attached stone is blue! Just like with the bracelet, this piece will work well with most of my closet.

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery Box ElephantA close up of the elephant and rock charm:

I ADORN U JewelMint Collective Mystery Box ElephantOverall, this was a good box for me. I loved the earrings and will definitely wear the other two pieces. I paid $39.99 and got approximately $55 worth of jewelry, so no complaints. That’s not an amazing deal, but it’s always really fun to get mystery boxes and it helps me get some pieces that I otherwise wouldn’t have tried. I appreciate how they included one bracelet, one pair of earrings, and one necklace. I hope they did that for all the boxes! So did you get this mystery box? If so, I’d love to see what you received!

As always, all views in this review are the opinion of the author. Nothing was received in exchange for a review, and I am not affiliated with JewelMint or I ADORN U.

RocksBox September Review

I was pleasantly surprised with my first Rocksbox today. Rocksbox is a subscription service for jewelry, but it’s different from a regular subscription box because it’s more like jewelry rental. For $19/month you get 3 different pieces sent to you, and after 60 days you can send them back for 3 new items. If you happen to love any of the jewelry, you can keep it and they will charge your credit card for the amount listed on the packing slip. For a picky person like myself (especially when it comes to jewelry), this is a fantastic idea.

If you’re curious about RocksBox and want to try it, you can click here and use the code FriendsRock to get your first month free!

This box arrived inside a padded envelope, which also included a return envelope to send the jewelry back in. The box itself is really quite nice, and I think it’s perfect for gift-giving.

My first piece is a pair of Green Glass Earrings from David Aubrey, valued at $32.00. With the RocksBox 20% discount, I can purchase it for $25.60. Unfortunately, it’s not really my style and feels a bit on the heavy side for earrings.

rocksbox4My second piece is the Chaplin Bracelet from Gorjana, valued at $50.00. I have a few pieces from Gorjana and know that the quality is not bad. I like the minimal style of the bracelet, but I found it to be a little on the small side. It fits perfectly on my wrist with no extra space (do I have fat wrists??), and I prefer my bracelets a bit on the roomy side. Too bad I probably won’t be keeping this either. rocksbox6

And my third item was supposed to be Wrapped in Gold Mini Earrings Silver with 18K Plate by TZEN, valued at $110.00, but it wasn’t included in the box. It’s on my packing slip and I would have been very excited to try it out, so that was kind of a bummer. I’ve emailed their customer service to see what happened, and they were very helpful and understanding.

rocksbox7While this might sound like a negative review (missing an item and won’t be keeping the other two items), it really isn’t. I forgot to fill out my preferences in my account settings before I got the box, so it’s no surprise the first pair of earrings weren’t my style. As for the missing item, they’re a small company and I’m confident that it’s a rare mistake. I definitely will be trying them for at least another month or two before I make a final decision. So how about you? I’d love to hear from any current subscribers about their experiences!
