Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Eek, totally behind again! Happy first day of December, everyone! I just have a couple reviews to wrap up from November–Thanksgiving was so much craziness I’m still playing catchup with my to-do list. Anyways, yay for more men’s subscription boxes! My better half sometimes gets a little jealous of all my awesome boxes, so it’s great that he gets to try something too. (We still get Bespoke Post boxes but I have a bad habit of claiming the contents for myself!) It’s always a good day when a men’s subscription service reaches out to offer a box in exchange for a review!

The Harrison Blake Monthly Subscription is a $25.00 per month subscription (shipping included) that focuses on men’s fashion accessories. Each box is curated around a particular look and color scheme, and includes 1 necktie and 4 additional accessories. Since all the items are meant coordinate together for a cohesive outfit, it’s an easy cheat for the guy who wants to be stylish without having to think too hard about his outfit. All the items are exclusive, so if you like a particular item you would have to subscribe to receive it.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

The November box definitely feels cold-weather appropriate. I like the rich burgundy color and the interesting textures. Since all the items are exclusive to Harrison Blake, the value for each item is stated on the information card as “average retail price”, which I have found to be pretty fair.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Knit Block NeckTie | $30.00
Perfect for winter! The knit texture and the dark colors feel very seasonally appropriate. The bottom of the tie ends in a straight line, unlike traditional ties that end in a V shape. I do feel like this is a more bold choice to send in a subscription service–not everyone can wear a tie like this for work. My husband works as a physician and when he’s not in scrubs he’s only allowed to wear very classic business attire. My brother works at a university and also said he would be not able to wear this. I think this would be great for someone who likes wearing ties outside of work, since if your workplace requires neckties it probably means more traditional styles.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

A closeup of the texture! It feels well made and the knit has a good weight to it. The tie is 100% polyester.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Exclusive label in the back. The part of the tie that actually goes around your neck is backed with a black satin fabric, so it feels smooth against your skin. Love that attention to detail!

Car Tie Clip | $25.00
My favorite item in the box! It’s very sturdy and the construction quality is great. I love interesting tie clips! It’s a great way to add a little personality while keeping your look very polished and professional. My brother would love this, so I will be sending it to him.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Microfiber Pocket Square | $15.00
A perfect match for the necktie that came in this box. It’s got a classic dot pattern on one side and a more bold pattern on the reverse side. Even though my husband can’t wear the tie from this month at work, the pocket square is something he can definitely use! He recently got a new charcoal suit and the colors go together beautifully. I think burgundy will go with any suit color, so it’s a great versatile choice for the colder months!

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

The reverse is more bold, but nothing crazy. Feels very timeless and elegant.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Burgundy Stripe Socks | $8.00
Who doesn’t like getting new socks? I think this is my husband’s favorite part of the box, mostly because he’s always really excited to get crew socks. Not sure what these are made of, but they feel well constructed. I’ve put them through the washer twice already and they haven’t shrunk or pilled. The elastic is also holding up very well.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Harrison Blake Travel/Shoe Bag | $6.00
We are constantly losing shoe bags in this household, so I always welcome new ones. The quality isn’t great on this one, but it’s fine for getting the job done. I do wish the value didn’t count towards the total for the box, since the logo is so large that it feels like a promotional item.

Harrison Blake Apparel Subscription November Box Review

Overall I think it was a solid box. I love the colors and the variation in items! It’s just unfortunate that the big ticket item didn’t really work for my husband’s needs. The total value comes to $84.00, which I think is fair. Since everything is small batch and exclusive to the box, I can see these values being accurate.

However, I wish I could get more details about each item on the information card. Besides the tie, I have no idea what materials anything is made of. It’s also all unbranded and doesn’t come with packaging, which I think sort of lowers the perceived value. It would have been nice to be able to easily gift some of the items that my husband can’t use, but since it’s unbranded it doesn’t feel substantial enough for a gift.

I think this would be a good subscription service for someone who wears a lot of suits at work, and also likes wearing business or business casual clothing outside of work. If you like to live in T-shirt and jeans once you get off work (like my husband), I doubt you’ll get to use all the items in the box each month. We would only subscribe if they implemented a system like Bespoke Post in which you get to preview the box and skip a shipment if it doesn’t appeal to you.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

Wow, Thanksgiving is next week! It really snuck up on me this year (but then again, I’m pretty sure I say this every year). I’m actually super excited to host family dinner this year and have been going nuts on Pinterest looking at cute decor ideas and fun recipes. Hope everyone is just as excited as I am, if not more! Today I’ll be reviewing the November POPSUGAR box, which really fit in perfectly with my plans for Thanksgiving.

POPSUGAR Must Have is a subscription service that sends a variety of items for women that are curated by the POPSUGAR editors. Items typically include food, beauty, home, among other miscellaneous things. Each month is $39.99/month, but you can use the code REFER5 to get $5 off your first month.

Stowaway Cosmetics The Dawn to Dusk Palette | $25.00
This was the first spoiler item that POPSUGAR released, and I admit that when I first saw it I wasn’t that excited. I already own the Naked2 Basics palette which is really compact and the colors are gorgeous. It’s my go-to for when I travel and I hadn’t planned to replace it any time soon. So I assumed I would be gifting it.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

But look at these colors! I love that the top row has warm undertones and the bottom row has cool undertones. You can easily get a ton of different looks from these 8 colors. The lighter colors can also work as a highlighter, thus helping to cut down even further if you’re planning to travel.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

Seriously, this thing is so slim and compact! It’s about the size of a credit card and very thin. I was planning to gift it, but now that I have it in hand I’m thinking I’ll keep it! I ordered 2 boxes this month so I’ll still be able to gift one, but I wish I had more to use for stocking stuffers. This would really be a great staple item in any girl’s makeup collection!

Pehr Chambray Table Runner in Wine | $44.00
Oh my gosh, love this so much! The Pehr brand has been featured in a previous POPSUGAR box and I loved the quality, so I know this will be held to the same standard. It definitely feels very well made. The colors are just perfect for the holidays! Wine and cream are such a timeless and classic combination, I think it would work for anyone! The size of this table runner is also very versatile: at 90″ x  14″ it would be great for a lot of different table shapes and lengths. It’s actually because of this table runner that I ordered a second box!

Meri Meri Star Party Picks | $8.00
How adorable are these? And so incredibly festive without being too holiday specific. It can work for a variety of holidays, events, and parties. The box comes with 2 different sized stars in 2 different colors. I think they would be perfect for hors d’oeuvres or cupcake toppers! I really can’t wait to use these for my Thanksgiving family dinner that I am hosting! The timing was truly perfect. If I like how they turn out, I’ll definitely be ordering more. Meri Meri also sells fruit shaped party picks and they are so cute!

Kendra Scott Elaina Rose Gold Bracelet in White Pearl | $50.00
Who doesn’t love Kendra Scott jewelry? They’re good quality (especially for its price point!), classic, and super trendy right now. I love the rose gold! The white and rose gold combination is so beautiful. The white pearl stone will work with any outfit!

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

Simple and dainty, which is exactly my style. I love how it looks and I’ve already gotten compliments on it! So excited to gift my extra bracelet to my best friend.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

The adjustable sliding closure is my favorite. You can easily put it on with one hand and the little charms at the ends are cute! The dangling ends are a decent weight and not too long, so it’s not in the way at all.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

I almost forgot to take a picture of this last detail: the back of the stone! How beautiful and intricate, right? I almost like it more than the front of the stone itself!

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

Oogie’s Toffee Butter Popcorn | $3.00
Yum! You really can’t go wrong with toffee butter popcorn. My only complaint is that the bag is small and not the full sized version. I would have loved a huge bag of this. But my waistline thanks POPSUGAR for the little bag, especially with all the decadent holiday food I’m going to be eating soon!

AJ Goods Charcoal Nest Wire Bowl | $35.00
When I first pulled this out of the box I wasn’t sure what to think. I was excited about the idea of a decorative basket but was on the fence about the wire aesthetic. I was worried that it would be too industrial looking for my home.

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

And then I just grabbed some citrus I had and threw it in…and I totally love it. It looks so chic yet casual, right? Like sort of effortlessly nice? I’m so glad I’ll have 2 of these since I got 2 boxes! They will be perfect for scented pinecones come Christmas time, and fruit for the rest of the year!

POPSUGAR Must Have November 2016 Box Review

What an amazing box! I was seriously blown away. I ordered a second box immediately and am so glad that I did. The value is $165.00, and I think all the items were very appropriate for November. This is hands down my favorite box of the year from POPSUGAR! The curation is so on point and the quality of each item is wonderful. I’m hoping this is a streak that they stay on for December as well! Can’t wait to see what’s in my box next month!

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Happy Halloween! I always look forward to dressing up and passing out candy to children in the neighborhood. I like to get really festive with my decor as well, so we have stacks of pumpkins outside and plenty of fun garlands draped everywhere. We don’t get many trick-or-treaters here so we spoil the ones that do come! Full size candy bars, y’all. Just saying 🙂

Peaches and Petals is a monthly subscription service that sends out vintage-modern items and beauty goods. For $19.99 a month (includes shipping), you’ll receive a mix of jewelry, fashion accessories, lifestyle goods, and beauty samples.

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Each month has a theme for the box, and for October it was “Pumpkin Spice”. I’m totally one of those people who loves pumpkin spice everything (highly recommend trying pumpkin spice ice cream, it’s amazing!!!) so this is perfect.

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Mornin’ Pumpkin Travel Mug | $8.00 (?)
Thanks to various subscription boxes I have lots of travel mugs now, but since I have a serious coffee/tea habit I’ll put them to good use. I like the simplicity of this design. However, it’s a very no-frills mug. It doesn’t offer insulation and the cap is not leak proof. It’s very cute but won’t be the first one I reach for in my cabinet.

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

The cap is a sliding mechanism that is held in place with a silicone ring. It’s secure enough to use for light travel (like in your car’s cup holder) but I wouldn’t trust it to stay leak-proof in a bag or anything like that.

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Plaid Cozy Scarf | $5.00 (?)
Does this scarf look familiar to you? It looks really similar to the one we got from FabFitFun, right? I also saw a very similar scarf to this at Target the other day for only $5, so that’s what I’m estimating this scarf is worth. It’s very soft and cozy, but significantly smaller than the FFF one from Modcloth. I do like the color pattern–very classic autumn!

Pumpkin Pie Scented Candle | $6.00
Yum! I adore all candles but fall scents have a special place in my heart. This pumpkin pie candle smells amazing! I find myself wishing this candle were bigger because I like it so much. It makes your house smell exactly like you’re baking a pumpkin pie. I can’t wait to burn it for Thanksgiving!

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Another great thing: it came in a gift box! I always appreciate it when subscription companies send out items that are individually packaged like this. It makes it super easy to gift. The packaging on this candle is so pretty: love the rustic ribbon and mason jar!

Mandala Color-a-Puzzle | $1.00 (?)
I saw a similar puzzle to this in Target’s $1 section (are you seeing a trend for my obsession with Target?), so that’s what I’m estimating the value at. My plan for this item is to pack it all into a small ziplock bag and bring it on my next international flight. Hey, if I have to kill 14 hours I might as well make something pretty!

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

Fannie May Chocolate | $1.00
I’m surprised this made it to me all in one piece without melting! It’s still so hot here in Houston! Of course, you can’t have an October box without a sweet treat, right? I’ve always liked caramel and chocolate so this is a natural winning combination. And I will never have anything negative to say about getting tasty chocolate in the mail!

Peaches and Petals October 2016 Review

The overall value is around $21.00, which is a tiny bit above the cost of the box. But you do have to take my estimate with a grain of salt, since it’s always quite difficult to calculate value for Peaches and Petals boxes. They send lots of unbranded items that are harder to track down. I generally use Target as a good rule of thumb–if I can find it in the $1 section I’ll only value it at that cost!

I think the curation was quite nice this month. It felt very fall to me and I think the pumpkin spice theme is cute. It did feel oddly similar to the FabFitFun box though, with the scarf and travel mug and coloring puzzle. Most likely a coincidence, since I’m sure boxes do their curation several months in advance. It just was a little unfortunate since I can’t help but compare this box to the FabFitFun box. There’s a significant price difference in cost ($20 vs $50) but also a huge difference in value ($21 vs $240) While I’m not expecting all subscription to match the value that FFF sends (how crazy would that be?!), I would like to see a higher value from Peaches and Petals in the future.

Free 12-Piece Nail Polish Set ($168 Value) with Julep Subscription!

Julep has a reputation for great sign up bonuses, but this is the best one I’ve seen! They are offering a free 12-piece gift (valued at $168) when you sign up for a Julep Maven subscription!

Use this link and coupon code FREEFALL to get this free gift when you sign up!

Free 12-Piece Nail Polish Set ($168 Value) with Julep Subscription!

And I totally caved–I signed up for a subscription again! I don’t need any more polish in my life, but I love to give Julep as stocking stuffers for Christmas. I figure this is an amazing deal because I get 12 free bottles of nail polish (score!!!) and I’ll pick up some hand cream and makeup with my subscription.

This box is $24.99 with a monthly subscription or $19.99 with a 3-month subscription. You can customize the box to get exactly what you want: you can swap out items and add items freely! I’m looking forward to getting mostly body lotion and hand cream and cuticle oil, but you can also add makeup and tools and skincare. If you’re curious, this would be a great time to try. This gift is pretty amazing, I can’t wait to receive it!

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Is anyone else wondering where October went? It feels like it zoomed by and Halloween is just around the corner! I finally got a chance to break out all my fall decor and adorn the front door with pumpkins, so I’m one happy camper right now. Up for review today is the October POPSUGAR box!

My Cup of Cocoa Dark Drinking Chocolate | $4.99
It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that the first item I pulled out was the hot chocolate! It took a lot of resolve not to finish this whole can right away. We’ve tried this brand before from POPSUGAR, when they sent out a cake product. I remember the chocolate taste being rich and full, so I knew this would be a great hot chocolate. And I was not disappointed–great chocolate flavor and not too sweet! I also love that it’s a milk-free product, so you can add the milk of your choice. My fiance is lactose sensitive so I love that he will get to enjoy this with almond milk! Would definitely repurchase!

Lalicious Brown Sugar Vanilla Shower Oil and Bubble Bath | $28.00
Most of the year I shy away from overly sweet scents, but once October hits I can’t get enough! The holidays and rich vanilla scents really go hand in hand, don’t they? I think the choice of a shower oil is really smart, since it’s so moisturizing and decadent when cold weather is notorious for stripping skin of moisture. Of course, we don’t have any sign of cold weather here but it’s never too early to prepare for when it does come around. Shower oils are also perfect for shaving, I swear by it! Happy to receive a huge bottle of this!

The Original MakeUp Eraser Mini | $12.00
I already own the full sized version of this, and totally swear by it! I’ll admit that I was initially really skeptical. I mean, how?? How does a little cloth remove makeup with nothing but water? But it seriously works! I don’t like to use it for my eye makeup since it doesn’t do an amazing job with mascara (especially waterproof mascara), but for everything else it removes all traces of makeup. It’s gentle, reusable, effective, and perfect for travel. I’m very pleased to have a mini now!

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Henri Bendel Packable Umbrella | $58.00
I’m a little confused about this item, since it’s the “hero item” of this box. At $58, it’s by far the most expensive item in the box. But it doesn’t really feel like a fall item, and it’s a super overpriced umbrella for the quality. This same umbrella was actually a gift with purchase at Henri Bendel a while back, so it’s probably overstock or something. I’m disappointed that the most expensive item is a gift with purchase manual umbrella (seriously, they couldn’t splurge a couple bucks for an automatic??) that should be valued at $15 max. On the Henri Bendel website all their umbrellas are automatic and retail for $58. That stands to reason that this one definitely should not be $58 estimated retail.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Now that I’ve said all the things I dislike about this umbrella, let’s talk about some of the good. I like the pattern even though I usually dislike brown. I think it’s simple enough to work for anyone and interesting enough to stand out. It’s a signature Henri Bendel pattern so it’s classic and recognizable by people who know the brand.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Holds up fairly well in the light wind (you can’t tell but it was sort of a windy day when I tested this, haha) and the construction is decent but nothing spectacular. Again, I think this is a $15 or less umbrella. I’ve put it in my car as a backup option, but my current umbrellas are sturdier and automatic and they only cost $20 each!

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Morning Culture Rise and Shine Diner Mug | $16.00
I admit to being a bit of a mug hoarder, so it’s always exciting when I get a new mug in a subscription box. Unfortunately, diner mugs aren’t really my style. I like the simple typographic design, and wish I could get it on a more sleek and refined mug shape. The good news: it comes in its own box so it will be really easy to gift.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

For those who don’t really know what a diner mug is (I didn’t!), here’s a picture of the rim. You see how thick it is? The handle and the rim are really hefty and makes the whole mug feel really heavy and clumsy. I guess I would describe this as a really “clunky” mug. I’m sure it’s a lot sturdier than your regular mug, but I prefer thinner walls and a more elegant handle.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eye Pen | $8.99
I’m all about finding great drugstore makeup, because I really don’t believe price always correlates with quality. Covergirl makes some fabulous mascara for a fraction of what designer high end mascara costs! I’m glad to see this is considered a “special extra” though, so it isn’t supposed to count towards the value of the box and is a sponsored item. I don’t have much experience with Revlon products but I’m very happy to try. I need another eyeliner like a bullet in the head but I do see a lot of great reviews for this. I’ve promised myself I won’t open any more eyeliners until I finish my current one, so into the pile it goes.

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Power Your Happy by Lisa Sugar | $25.00
This is another “special extra”, which I’m relieved about. It would be so tacky to include your own book in your box as an actual item! I haven’t read this from cover to cover yet but have sort of skimmed through a few sections. Overall it’s not really my type of book, but I think would make a good gift for a recent graduate or someone making a career transition. It’s very upbeat and positive, not at all one of those “here is a strict plan for how to be successful” books. You know what I mean?

POPSUGAR Must Have October 2016 Box Review

Overall October felt like a mixed bag for me. I liked many of the items but feel like the box was missing something. I guess because the most expensive item is a manual umbrella it feels a bit lackluster. The box comes to a total of $118.99 without the two extra items. It’s good, but once you factor in that half the value comes from an umbrella, it seems really overinflated. And without the 2 special extras, this box would feel especially sparse. I think if you’re going to add extras, you have to make sure the box can stand on its own without them. Because otherwise they aren’t truly “special extras that don’t count towards the value”.

Luckily I did enjoy several items in the box: I love the drinking chocolate, the makeup eraser, and the body oil. But the value of those only adds to $45, which is a tiny bit more than what the box costs. Overall I still think it was worth it because I can gift the mug and the book, and I’ll still use the umbrella. Just not one of my favorite months.
